The first race of the evening was the
Winged Outlaw Mini Sprints heat race, which
was quite a battle
between points winner #39
Jeff West, and #23 Kent Wood. #23
Kent Wood led the entire race, until 2 to go, when #39 Jeff West got around
him to take the checkers. Leaving the finish: #39 Jeff West,
#23 Kent Wood, and #2+2 Rocky Wood respectively.
The second race of the evening was
the Mini Stock heat race, which was taken by #65 Stephen Hendry from
flag to flag, with #86 Jeff Rooney for second
and #87 Trey Rottman for third. The real excitement in this race
were the 3 cars battling for 4th place! #17 Rickey Rottman, #7 Darren
Phillips and #BD21 Mickey Trosclair were all vying for the 4th place position
with #17 Rickey Rottman holding on to the checkers!
Then we move to the Pure Stock’s first
heat race, where #3T David Creel took the win from flag to flag,
with #4 Chad Alleman second, and #37 Michael
Meissner for third. The second Pure Stock heat was led all the way
by #112 Rocky Taylor until the #3J Ray Creel hit him in the rear quarter
panel going into the dog leg putting #112 sideways and sending him to the
pits. The finish: #3J Ray Creel, #00 David Hunt, and #3 Kenneth
Hunt respectively.
The 4 Cylinder Modified heat was won
flag to flag by #69 Punkin Taylor, with second
place going to #27c
Scotty Covington, and third to #27 Robert
White.
The first Street Stock heat was a real
battle between #118 David Scott and #84 Billy Pretlove until #118
Scott got a flat tire and had to go to the
pits. Leaving the win to #84 Billy Pretlove, with #52 Walter Crawford
for
second and #M00 Tommy Sellno. The second
heat was won flag to flag by #MT2 Punkin Taylor,
with #55 second, and #14M Danny Martin for third.
The Super Pro Stock heat was won flag
to flag by #121 Dwayne Balfantz, with #12 Joyce Shelton second,
and #23 Melvin Barber for third. Actually
#7 Bryan Foy took third, but was already locked
in for the feature, giving third to #23 Barber.
The Late Model heat race was won flag
to flag by #56 Campy Holley, with #7 Ricky May in second, and
#W6 Kevin Watts for third.
Saturday night’s feature night, started
off with the Winged Outlaw Mini Sprints, where
points champion #39
Jeff West took
the win from flag to flag. Second place was a battle between #23
Kent Wood, and #96 Amanda
Hooks, with #96
Hooks taking second with 2 laps to go, leaving #23 Wood for third.
The Mini Stock feature race was plagued
with cautions from start to finish. There really was no battle here,
as #27 Scotty Covington took the lead and
stayed there, with #5 Herb Champagne second and
#65 Stephen Hendry for third. On the white flag lap, #65 Hendry almost
caught #5 Champagne to take second, but could not beat him out of turn
#4 going to the checkers.
The Pure Stock feature was led by #24C
Brett Cressionnie until 1/2 way through the race, he developed a
flat tire and had to return to the pits.
This left the lead to #7 Mark Barbara for one lap when the 7X tied up with
him to send #7 Barbara to the rear. This left the win to #3T David
Creel, second to #3J Ray Creel, and third #00 David Hunt.
The 4 Cylinder Modified feature was
led every lap by #17 Jimmy Necaise who took the
win, leaving second
to #69 Punkin Taylor,
and third for #27 Robert White.
The Street Stock feature was led lap
for lap by #34 Noah Daspit who took the win, leaving
second to #41
Roger Flynn, and third to #MT2
Punkin Taylor.
The Super Pro Stock feature was won
by #71 Chris Wall lap for lap, with #7 Bryan Foy
nipping at his heels.
#7 Foy could not get around #71 Wall leaving
#7 Foy for second, and #27 Rusty Cooper for third.
The Late Model feature race was a shoo-in
for #1 KI Davis who led the race lap for lap
to the checkers, no
one could even get close to him! This
is only the fourth race for KI Davis in the #1 car built by Jody Peterson,
and
the first race for a new prototype rear suspension.
They are looking to find a major sponsor for next year to run in
the Rick’s Series of Late Model racing.
Points champion #F4 Dwight Falcon took second place with virtually no
competition, leaving third to #7 Ricky May.

Super Pro Stock/Late Model Championship Races
This weekend we ran $3,000 to win Late
Model, and $1,000 to win Super Pro Stock races. Qualifying the big
boys as well as, the Mini Stock, and 4 cylinder modified races were held
Friday night. Saturday night we ran the Pure Stock, Street Stock
races, and attempted running the big boys features. The fog rolled
in on the Super Pro Stock feature so bad that the Latel Model feature was
postponed until Sunday afternoon. To say there was alot of excitement
(more ways than one) would be an understatement! We waited 15 minutes
for the #3T David Creel to take his spot at the rear of the field after
he spun out in turn #2 near the end of the Pure Stock feature race.
Then on Sunday instead if "The Hatfields and McCoys" we had our own Pike
County's version "The Kirfields and Lipseys". We start off Friday
night with timing in of the Super Pro Stock and Late Model classes.
The fastest qualifying times for the Super Pro Stock class were #41 Bobby
Helmer with a 15:72, and #71 Chris Wall with a 15:81. In the Late
Model class it was #84 David Glass with a 14:64, and #56 Campy Holley with
a 14:75.
The first race of the evening was the Mini
Stock's first heat race, with, of course, #27 Scotty Covington taking the
win flag to flag, and #86 Jeff Rooney second, and #01 James Bordeleon for
third. The second Mini Stock heat race found #5
Herb Champagne taking the win from flag to flag, and #2W Thomas Matina
second, with #43 Charlie Monistere taking third from #17 Rickey Rottman
after a great battle.
The 4 Cylinder Modified heat race was won
pole to pole by #69 Punkin Taylor, with second
going to #17 Jimmy Necaise, and third #27 Jonathon
Clayton.
The Mini Stock feature was won flag to flag
again by #27 Scotty Covington, with #5 Herb Champangne
taking second. The real battle was third place, where #86 Jeff Rooney
got knocked to fourth by #01 James Bordeleon.
The 4 Cylinder Modified feature was lead
by #69 Punkin Taylor, with #A1 Jody Miller knocking
on his door, he tried all his might, but couldn't get around the #69 Taylor
leaving #A1 Miller second, and #17 Jimmy Necaise
for third.
The first Super Pro Stock qualifying heat
started off with #24 Christian Rottman in the lead until #7 Bryan Foy finally
got around him to take the win, leaving #24 Rottman second, and #12 Joyce
Shelton for third. The #98 Kevin Mason lost his oil pan and all his
oil on the track in turns 3 & 4 causing the leader #7 Foy to slide
thru turns 3 & 4! A caution was called, and after cleanup the
race continued. The second Super Pro Stock qualifying heat
race was lead from flag to flag by #27 Rusty Cooper, with second going
to #42J Davin Bates, and third left to #26 Randy Deschamp.
The Late Model's first qualifying heat race
was lead from flag to flag by #82 Wade Glass, with #F4 Dwight Falcon and
#85 Curt Lipsey battling for second, with #85 Lipsey winning the battle
and taking second, leaving third to #F4 Falcon. The second Late Model
qualifyin heat was easily won by #W6 Kevin Watts, with #99 Alan Kirfield
Jr. taking second, and #38 Danny Jo Thomas for third.
Saturday night we start off with the Pure
Stock's first heat race where we start off with #24C
Brett Cressionne running off the back birm knocking him out of the
race. The win was taken by #7 Mark Barbara, with a great showing
for #3W Sid Mack being a new driver, and taking second, leaving third for
#3 David Hunt. The second Pure Stock heat was won by #3T David Creel,
with #3tii Mark Woodall taking second, and #37 Alvin
Fletcher taking third.
The first Street Stock heat was won by (as
usually) #40 Ronnie Flynn, with #118 David Scott taking second, and #44
Billy Stewart for third. The second Street Stock heat, as usually
was won by #41 Roger Flynn, with second taken by #34
Noah Daspit. The real race was third place, where #77 Fraisse
Labarre held third until #V4 Bryan Crawford finally
got around him to take it from him.
The Pure Stock feature was intense from start
to finish, with the only hang up being that the #3T David Creel spun in
turn #2 and refused to go to the rear for about 15 minutes! The win
was taken by #7 Mark Barbara who fought off #3T Creel, who was in second
until he spun out, leaving second to #3 David Hunt. Another great
showing for a new driver #3W Sid Mack took third.
The Street Stock feature had a hard time
getting started, but once they started it was a good race. The win
went to #40 Ronnie Flynn, after #41 Roger Flynn spun out in turn #2 and
was towed out of the race. Second place was held flag to flag by
#34 Noah Daspit, with the real battle being third
place. #118 David Scott held third until #44 Billy Stewart finally
got around him.
The Super Pro Stock feature was won flag
to flag by #41 Bobby Helmer. #71 Chris Wall held second until he
came down out of turn #4 into #7 Bryan Foy piling up all the cars behind
them, #71 Wall left the race, leaving second to #7 Foy. The end of
the race was a real feat for the drivers as the fog started moving in on
them cutting their visibility, and the lap traffic cars would not, or couldn't
see the flag man waving the blue and yellow to move over. #27 Rusty
Cooper finished third, but was black flagged for rough driving after the
race, leaving #121 Dwayne Balfantz for third.
After lining up for the feature, the Late
Model drivers determined the visibility too bad to continue the race safely,
so it was rescheduled for Sunday afternoon. On Sunday, with 3 laps
down, tempers where flaring, as the #99 Alan Kirkfield Sr. (driver change)
put second place #85 Curt Lipsey into the wall causing the yellow flag
to come out. However, as #85 Lipsey jumped out of his car and started
to run across the track toward the #99 Kirkfield the flag man changed the
yellow to red and track officials as well as the flag man ran across the
track after him. The #99 Kirkfield was escorted by officials off
the track property, as they called a 15 minute intermission. During
that 15 minute intermission, they allowed the cars to leave the track and
make adjustments, which upset many of the other drivers who stayed on the
track during the intermission, not knowing that they were giving those
that left the track their spots back! They thought that because they
remained on the track, they would be first, second, third, etc. and those
who left the track would tail in at the rear. Only at Hickory!
After this intermission, #84 David Glass
started the lead, with #W6 Kevin Watts holding second and #F4 Dwight Falcon
was holding third. With many position changes throughout the race,
#W6 Watts took the lead until #82 Wade Glass got around him for the win,
leaving #W6 Watts for second, #3T Terry Threeton held third for alot of
the race until 3 laps to go, when #84 Wade Glass got around him for
third, leaving #3T Threeton for fourth, and #66 David Knight fifth.
08/21/99
We start off with the Mini Stock heat and
#01 James Bordeleon taking the win from flag to flag, and #5
Herb Champagne holding second until #1X Elvis Tuberville takes it from
him on the white flag lap, leaving #5 Champagne for third. The second
Mini Stock heat was of course won by #27 Scotty Covington as usual.
Leaving second to #65 Stephen Hendry, and third for #5 Shane Hill.
The first Pure Stock heat finds #7 Mark Barbara
leading the whole race until lap traffic #11 got in the way and blocked
the #7 Barbara, so that the #3J Ray Creel could steal first from him, leaving
#7 Barbara for second, and #3Tii Mark Woodall for
third. In the second Pure Stock heat, #84 Bennie
Raynor lost control of his car in turn #2 and got sent to the rear!
#3T David Creel bumped everyone, and everyone bumped him back! This was
a very exciting race! #24C Brett Cressionne took
first, with #3T David Creel for second, and #13 Mark Hebert third.

Punkin Taylor tie up on the back straightaway, leaving #V4
Bryan Crawford for second, and #79 Benny Creel for third.
The Winged Outlaw
Mini Sprints first heat was a heart stopper, as the #8 James Brosh's
steering bar broke and he hit the wall full blast! Thank God he was
not seriously injured! Upon restarting the race, #39
Jeff West took the win with an entire track separating him from the
others! Second went to #69 Terry Light, and third was #23
Kent Wood. The second Winged Outlaw Mini
Sprints heat was lead by #21 Chuck Polovich
the entire race, with #38 Little Joe West second,
and #1 Kenneth Wood for third.
The Four Cylinder Modified heat was very
exciting, as #A1 Milton Marshall takes the win after battling with #69
Punkin Taylor, leaving him to settle for second, and #17
Jimmy Necaise for third.
The Super Pro Stock heat race found #28 Phillip
Honeycutt taking the win from flag to flag, with 3 cars fighting over the

Balfantz. With #23 Barber taking second, #12 Shelton holding on for
third, and #121 Balfantz settling for fourth.
The Late Model heat found #56 Campy Holley
leading the race to the checkers. The real battle was 2nd and 3rd,
as #F4 Dwight Falcon, #3T Terry Threeton, and #W6 Kevin Watts who came
from dead last to battle with them! #F4 Falcon takes second, as #W6
Watts squeezes out #3T Threeton at the end of the race to take third, leaving
#3T Threeton for fourth.
The Mini Stock feature was just as exciting
in the tech area as it was on the race track! #27 Scotty Covington
jumped the start, won the race, then was DQ'd in tech for having the shocks
moved and not in stock location. #1X Elvis Tuberville held second
throughout the race only to be DQ'd in tech for weighing too light!
The official win was credited to #65 Stephen Hendry, with #5 Shane Hill
taking second, and #5 Herb Champagne winning third.
A note: #21 BJ Watts took 3rd, but was also DQ'd by tech for having Hoosier
tires on, and got busted changing them after the race before being called
to tech.
The Pure Stock feature was lead from flag
to flag by #3J Ray Creel, with #7 Mark Barbara taking second, and #3T David
Creel taking third.
The UMP Modified feature was cool to watch
as #26C Scott Holt was running around the track on 3 wheels! He takes the
win, with #2S Bobby Semple second, and #02 Tim Smith for third.
The Street Stock feature was a battle between
the 3rd, 4th, and 5th place spots! #40 Ronnie Flynn took the win with #41
Roger Flynn taking second. The #V4 Bryan Crawford,
#5W Angie West, and #84 Billy Pretlove battled
it out for third place! #V4 Crawford won the battle for third, leaving
fourth to #5W West, and fifth to #84 Pretlove.
The Winged Outlaw
Mini Sprints feature had another rollover, as the lap car #Y7 along
with #21 Chucky Polovich trying to go around
the #39 Jeff West for the lead were 3 wide,
and #21 Polovich wheel hopped #39 West and rolled! Leaving the win
to #23 Kent Wood, second to #1
Kenneth Wood, and third for #69 Terry Light.
The 4 Cylinder Modifed feature had its own
excitement, as #69 Punkin Taylor ran off with
the win, and the real fight was for second place. #A1
Milton Marshall started out in the second place spot, then broke, and
relinquished the spot to #17 Jimmy Necaise, with
#721 nipping at his rear quarter panel many times, bending it all to hell
to try to get second from him. Near the end of the race, a caution
was called on #17 Necaise, as #721 tried again to take second from him????
The finish #69 Punkin Taylor for first, #721 Steve
Underwood for second, leaving #17 Jimmy Necaise
coming back from the rear of the back after the caution to take third.
In the Super Pro Stock feature #27 Rusty
Cooper ran off with the win from the start to the finish, with #7 Bryan
Foy trying so hard to get to the front, but never could do it. The
real fight was for third, with #23 Melvin Barber, #121 Dwayne Balfantz,
#28 Phillip Honeycutt, and #12 Joyce Shelton all battling for the spot.
#28 Honeycutt had to leave the track, leaving the rest of the fight to
the other 3. The final resolution was #27 Rusty Cooper first place,
with #7 Bryan Foy for second, #23 Melvin Barber third, #121 Balfantz fourth,
and #12 Shelton settling for fifth!
The final race of the evening was the Late

great show battling for first place! #W6 Watts started out in first place
until he died in turn #2, giving #F4 Falcon the lead to the finish.
Second place went to #9 Chris Rouse, and third #56 Campy Holley.
08/14/99
Watching the big black clouds overhead, and
watching out for the tornado in Pearl River threat, we didn't start until
6pm. As everyone unloaded their stuff, reloaded their stuff, and
then unloaded their stuff again! But, no rain, and no tornado left us with
a very cool and beautiful evening. With 74 cars and 9 Winged
Outlaw Mini Sprints we ended up with a very good evening of racing!
Little Joe West is the newly elected President
of the Winged Outlaw Mini Sprints Association, Congratulations Joe!

one of the best races this year! With #5W Angie

pole to start. #5W Angie West started the lead and stayed there flag
to flag, with #MT2 Punkin Taylor right on her tail, leaving him second,
and #V4 Bryan Crawford for third. The second
Street Stock heat was a battle between #MK81 Keith Rodrigues and #118 David

The win was taken by #7 Jonathon Clayton, with second #69
Punkin Taylor, and third #15 Michael Taylor, leaving #17 Jimmy Necaise
for fourth.
The first Super Pro Stock heat started off
with a big bang! As pole sitter #Mr.X James Moody Jr. tapped the wall coming
out of turn #4 and started to spin, and wobbled down the front straightaway
until outside pole sitter #12 Joyce Shelton bumped him, and the entire
field behind them scattered! Half of them spun to avoid the crash,
as the other half went diving into the infield! It could have been
a great big pile up of cars, but due to the experience of these drivers
and their quick reactions, it was all avoided. The only car towed
was the #MrX Moody. Upon the restart, #62 Patrick Cotton started
with the lead until #71 Chris Wall finally got around him with 2 laps to
go, as did #12 Joyce Shelton right behind the #71 like glue! Leaving
the win #71 Chris Wall, second #12 Joyce Shelton, and third for #62 Patrick
Cotton. The second Super Pro Stock heat was lead by #16 Corie Herberger
until the last lap when #4 Jay Ladner took the lead from him. Leaving
the finish #4 Jay Ladner for first, #16 Corie Herberger for second, and
#23 Melvin Barber for third.
The Late Model heat was a hell of a race
for only a trophy! You'd thought they were racing for a million dollars!
Most of the race they were 3 wide all around the track, it was wild, and
hard to keep the score for not wantin to miss any of the excitement!
We start off with #00 Alan Netherland on pole, with #12 Jason Warner outside
pole. #00 Netherland takes the lead with #3T Terry Threeton second
and #F4 Dwight Falcon third, but not for long! As they all travel
around the track 3 wide #3T Threeton takes the lead, with #F4 Falcon second,

for him! #3T David Creel tried to take the lead from him, but just
could not do it, leaving him second, and #07 Bryant Coyne for third.
The Street Stock feature was a battle warranted
for a marriage counselor, as #5W Angie West took
the early lead with her old man #MT2 Punkin Taylor
in second, and #V4 Bryan Crawford for third.
However, 1/2 way through the race #MT2 Taylor takes the lead from #5 West

thru the traffic, only to get around him for the win. Second place
went to #3J Ray Creel on the outside.
The Winged Outlaw

Again the car count 1/2 what we started the
season with. We had 61 cars and 11 Winged
Outlaw Mini Sprints. The
radio show this morning talked about women
driving with the men, and Angie West and her 5W
has surely improved
enough to prove to the men that women can
do it too! Bryan Foy has had his facial surgery and i just talked
to him
(07/29/99) and he is at home recuperating,
the surgery went good, please lets all pray for his recovery, as he will
be
out 4 to 6 weeks approx. The chat room
is up and running with flying colors! We had a good turn out Tuesday night,
and plan to continue Tues and Thurs nights
at 7pm. Go to www.speed-demons.com, click
Dirt Track, and at the
bottom, click “Chat
Room”, you may need to increase your browser’s cache and memory to
keep from getting
thrown off. Bobby Helmer’s Super Pro
Stock engine is still in pieces, as he spun #2 and #4 rod bearings.
#34 Street
Stock Noah Daspit
ran at Suncoast Speedway, took fourth, then came to Hickory and ran fourth!
Two in one night,
not the first time Noah has been able to
do that! A topic of discussion that has come up, that we need to
pass along
to the management:
If a car in a class is DQ’d after pictures are taken and announcements
are made, then the cars behind him who move up don’t get any recognition
for taking one of the top 3 places legally! Maybe the announcer should
announce that a certain car was DQ’d, and who (which car who moved up to
take his place) actually won in that position! So the legal cars
can get some recognition by the fans!
The #19 Super Pro Stock car finally made
another debut and looked real good until he spit out a red hot spark plug
onto the track!
The first Mini Stock heat gave the #53 Mustang
a hell of a beating as he hit the wall hard a couple of times! The
leader started out as #01 James Bordeleon,
until #5 Herb Champagne took it from him, and then
#01 had to leave the
track. Leaving #86 Jeff Rooney for
second, and #53 for third. The second heat was lead from flag to flag by
#27
Scotty Covington, with #65 Stephen Hendry
for second, and #5 Shane Hill for third.
The first Pure Stock heat was lead from flag
to flag by the orange #37! Second was held by #3J Ray Creel, and third
by #112 Rocky Taylor. The second Pure
Stock heat started off with #96 Gary Sharp in the lead until he had to
leave
the track. Leaving the lead to #3T
David Creel, and second to #00, and third to #76 Steven King.
The Winged Outlaw
Mini Sprints first heat was lead flag to flag by #23
Kent Wood, second place went to #04 Kenny
Davis, and third to #24
Ed Haag. The second heat was lead from flag to flag by #39
Jeff West, with #38 Joe West
holding second until his engine died and
he had to leave the track, leaving second to #21
Chucky Polovich, and third
to #96 Amanda Hooks.
#78 Marty Edwards hit the wall hard coming out of turn #4 and rolled several
times!
The first Street Stock heat was lead from
flag to flag by #V4 Bryan Crawford, with second by
#79 Benny Creel.
Third was held by #J36 John Schexnayder,
until he died on the front straightaway on the checkered flag lap, leaving
third to #10 Snooky Hebert. The second
heat was lead from flag to flag by #40 Ronnie Flynn, with second going
to
#41 Roger Flynn, and third to #5W
Angie West.
The UMP Modified heat was lead from flag
to flag by #26C Scott Holt, with second going to #2S Bobby Semple,
and third going to #84.
The 4 cylinder Modified heat was lead from
flag to flag by #15 Michael Taylor first, and #69
Punkin Taylor second.
Third place was a battle between #17
Jimmy Necaise and #721 Steve Underwood, with #17
Necaise winning third.
The Super Pro Stock class only had one heat,
which was lead by #19 Ray Creel, until he spit out a red hot spark plug
onto the track and had to pit. Leaving
the win to #28 Phillip Honeycutt, and second to #121 Dwayne Balfantz, with
third to #D309.
The Late Model class also had only one heat,
which was lead from flag to flag by #44 Howard Dempsey.
#125 (who
was in the rear spun out in turn #2 and left
the field. Third place #00 Alan Netherland was sent to the rear for
unknown reasons. Upon the restart,
#44 Dempsey took the win, with #56 Campy Holley
second, and #F4 Dwight
Falcon for third.
The Mini Stock feature was lead by #27 Scotty
Covington until he hit #65 Stephen Hendry to send #27 Covington to
the rear. The finish was #65 Stephen
Hendry first, with #5 Herb Champagne for second,
and #5 Shane Hill for third.
The Pure Stock Feature was lead from flag
to flag by #3t David Creel. #3J Ray Creel. Second was held
by the
orange #37, while #76 Stephen King, and #7
Mark Barbara were 3 wide battling for third. The orange #37 had to
leave the track, leaving second to #3J Ray
Creel and third to #76 Stephen King. However, they called #112 Rocky
Taylor to tech to take third place as #76
King, #38 Moody, and #96 Sharp were apparently DQ’d. Not sure about
this, but that’s how the newspaper has the
finish: #3t, #3j, and #112.
The Winged Outlaw
Mini Sprints feature race was a battle between #38
Joe West and #39 Jeff West for first place.
With #38 Joe West
taking the win leaving #39 Jeff West for
second and #23 Kent Wood for third.
The Street Stock feature was lead flag to
flag by #40 Ronnie Flynn first and #5W Angie West second,
with #79
Benny Creel for third. The newspaper
has a good story on Angie this week, congradulations Angie!
The UMP Modified feature was lead from flag
to flag by #26C Scott Holt, with #2S Bobby Semple for
second, and #7X Vicky McSwain for third.
The 4 cylinder Modified feature had a rough
start, as #15 Michael Taylor (on the inside), #721 Steve Underwood (in
the middle), and #17
Jimmy Necaise (on the outside) were 3 wide down the front straightaway
with #15 Michael
Taylor ended up swimming in the pond in the
infield by the flagstand, with #7 Jonathon Clayton right behind him!
Upon the restart, #69
Punkin Taylor took the lead for the rest of the race. #17
Jimmy Necaise held off #721
Underwood for second, and upon the white
flag lap to the checkers #721 tried to get under #17 Necaise in turn #3
and ended up on the birm with #17 clenching
the steering wheel to maintain control of the car and stay in second!
Leaving #721 in the dirt, gave third place
to #27 Scotty Covington.
The Super Pro Stock feature was lead from
flag to flag by #28 Phillip Honeycutt, with second going to #121 Dwayne
Balfantz, and third to #23 Melvin Barber.
The Late Model feature started out with #56
Campy Holley in the lead until he lost it in turn #2, went high and #44
tapped the brake to keep from hitting him,
and #F4 Dwight Falcon slid right in underneath to take the lead!
The final
was #F4 Dwight Falcon first, #56 Campy Holley
second, and #44 Howard Dempsey third.
The Powder Puff race found #79 DQ’d cause
it was a male cross dressing to race with the girls! The winner was #B1
Donna Everitt, with second going to #3T
Jane Wheat, and third to #34 Sherill Honeycutt, and it was a good race!
July 17, 1999
I heard from everyone how successful the
radio talk show was on this am! Sorry, I missed it, just
got out of the hospital, was medicated, and
slept through the whole thing! However, everyone
told me how great it was, and how many drivers
called to participate! Thanks

4th of July Mid-Season
Championship
NEW FACES IN THE WINNER’S CIRCLE!
If it wasn’t so time
consuming to time in all the classes, we should run racing
this way! As we had two
good nights of racing! Even though we didn’t get out of
there until after midnight
both nights! Or, maybe all classes should draw numbers
AT THE PIT MEETING, and race
for position in the heats!? Something to think
about! We had a very
low car count for an added purse championship race
weekend! As we had 77
cars, and 11 Winged Outlaw Mini Sprints Friday night,
and 84 cars, with 12 Sprints
Saturday night. WTIX 690am is back online with
Track Talk on Saturday mornings
10am till noon, please call in, as we have a very low number of callers
calling in. I am having my surgery Friday morning, so I will be out
of commission this weekend. If someone will tape the races I will
review it and write my story from it. Remember, we have
POINTS,
we have TIME-INS, we have a FORUM
page for comments, we have a
ROSTER
of all driver’s names, and a FOR SALE page
for drivers who have items
for sale. Whenever provided
with pictures, they will also be posted.
We start off with the Mini

in for poles for Saturday night. This heat race
found Dane Kennedy’s 1 Time

Herb Champagne third, #17 Rickey Rottman fourth, and #86 Jeff

Paul Chauvin fourth. #84 (Lingo’s car) driven by
Kash Wilson holding third,
black flagged for rough driving??? I didn’t see it. Heat

#79 Benny Creel second, #6 Mike Montgomery
third, #07 Bryant Coyne fourth,
and #13 Mark Hebert fifth.
The Street Stock class had

was found to be illegal), and #V4 Brian Crawford
locked in for poles.
The first heat #J36 John Schexnayder first, #84 Billy Pretlove
second, #5W
Angie West third, #MK81 Keith Rodrigues fourth. The second heat
found #118 David Scott first,

The Super Pro Stock class had
#28 Phillip Honeycutt and #41 Bobby Helmer
locked in for poles.
The first heat #7 Bryan Foy held first, with #18 Robert Foster
second, #121 Dwayne Balfantz
third, #14 Albert Holley fourth. The second heat
had #56 Rodney Sheridan first,
#62 (James King’s car) driven by Patrick Cotton
second, #23 Melvin Barber third,
#18 Alan French fourth. #71 Chris Wall led
most of the race, then had
to leave with a flat tire!
The Late Models had #11 (Rodrigues
car) driven by Cliff Darby, and #56 Campy
Holley locked in for poles.
The heat race had #1 Verlon Lee broke his
transmission, #F4 got a black
flag warning for jumping the start (no penalty), and
#4 Ladner jumped the start.
Once the heat race got rolling, #W6 Kevin Watts
took first, #F4 Dwayne Falcon
second, #3T Terry Threeton third, and #00 Alan
Netherland fourth.
The Winged Outlaw Mini Sprints
had #38 Little Joe West, and #96 Amanda
Hooks locked in for poles.
The heat race had #21 Chucky Polovich first, #8 Kevin Brosh for second,
#23 Kent Wood third, and #39 Jeff West fourth.

Underwood locked in for poles.
In the heat race, #17 Jimmy Necaise first,
#69
Punkin
Taylor second, #27 Scotty Covington third, #34 David Necaise fourth.
Milton
Marshall who has not driven in 3 years drove Bennie
Raynor’s #1 car and
tangled up with #4 Jimmy Hunt
to send both of them to the pits. #34 David
Necaise led the race until
#17 Jimmy Necaise got along side of him, and
side by
side down the back straightaway,
#34 punched it in the dog leg, took #3 too short,
and came out of turn #4 in
a spin, sending him to the rear.
FEATURES
The Mini Stock feature starts
out with #27 Scotty Covington taking the lead, with #4
Wayne Wimberly second from
flag to flag. #1Time held third until he got loose in the
dog leg and lost it!
The finish: #27 Covington, #4 Wimberley, #5 Herb Champagne
third, #5 Shane Hill fourth, #1Time fifth, and #2 sixth. However,
the first three were DQ’ed for illegal carburetors. I was told by the staff
that the carburetor checking tool fell into #27 so far it could have
come out through the intake!
(haha). Leaving the true finish #5 Shane Hill first, #1Time
Willie
McVay second, #2 third, #17 Rickey Rottman fourth, and #86 Jeff Rooney
fifth.
The Pure Stock Feature found
#7 Mark Barbara taking the lead, with #24C Brett
Cressionne
second from flag to flag! #3J Ray Creel held third flag to flag.
#MT2 Jeff
Taylor holds fourth until he
got a flat tire, leaving fourth to #79 Benny Creel. The back
of the field on this race were
often 3 wide fighting for the 5th-10th positions! It was such
a good fight, its worth mentioning:
#3T David Creel, #6 Mike Montgomery, #K1 JD
Kirby, #13 Mark Hebert,
#3Tii Mark Woodall, #MT2 Jeff Taylor, and #07 Bryant
Coyne
respectively.
The Winged Outlaw Mini Sprints
had a tough time getting started, once they all got
started, #96 Amanda Hooks takes
the lead until her engine started missing real bad, and
#38 Little Joe West takes it
from her, leaving her second. #21 Chucky Polovich takes third.
The UMP Modifieds only had
2 cars show up Friday night, so #11 Nick Sellier gets the
pole, and #38 takes outside
pole. Saturday night’s feature race found #26C Scott Holt
take the win flag to flag,
with #11 Nick Sellier second, and #2S Bobby Semple for third.
The Street Stock feature was
another good race. #40 Roger Flynn and #V4 Brian
Crawford take
first and second respectively from flag to flag! #KC1 Kash Wilson
lost a
wheel, #5W
Angie West, and #73 Bob Boyd ran out of track coming out of turn #2
and
both get flat tires off the
birm. #J36 John Schexnayder holds third most of the race with
#118 David Scott breathing
down his neck! With 2 laps to go #118 finally gets around
#J36 to take third, leaving
Schexnayder fourth.
The 4 Cylinder Modifed feature
found #4 Jimmy Hunt in the infield, and the wrecker
stuck in the mud to get him
out! #7 Jonathon Clayton takes the win, with #721 Steve
Underwood second, from flag
to flag. #17 Jimmy Necaise holds third,
and #69 Punkin
Taylor
fourth.
The Super Pro Stock feature
started with #28 Phillip Honeycutt in the lead most of the
race until #15 Radar spun out
in turn #2 and upon the restart, #28 gets black flagged for
jumping the start (no warning?).
This leaves #41 Bobby Helmer in the lead, with #7
Bryan Foy right on his tail.
With 2 laps to go #41 Helmer takes turn #2 high, leaving
room for #7 Foy to slide in
for the lead. And he never looked back, he had 1/2 track on
the rest of the field! Bryan’s
first feature win of the season! #41 Helmer takes second,
#18 Robert Foster third, and
#121 Dwayne Balfantz fourth.
The Late Model Feature started
with #56 Campy Holley in the lead, with #F4 Dwayne
Falcon right on his bumper
until he finally beat him out of turn #4 and down the front
straightaway. #F4 Falcon
and #56 Holley lead the field by 1/2 track! By the end of the
race, #F4 Falcon 1/2 track
in front of #56 Holley! The finish: #F4 Falcon first, #56
Holley second, #00 Alan Netherland
third, and #9 Duane Degruy fourth.

I did not realize how many listeners
we had on our Track Talk radio show until
it wasn’t on this morning! At the track
I had so many people ask me what
happened to it! Thanks for listening
guys! We had fun doing it! The radio station
owner/manager of WTIX 690 am canceled the
show, however, they did restart it
again this week (06/26/99)! The response
to missing the show last week was
overwhelming, and they decided to continue
it. If you would like to call in with any
comments, their number is (504) 260-9849,
and it is on Saturday mornings from
10am to noon. We do have a new chat
room and forum posted at:
http://forums.delphi.com/dirttrack/chat,
for the chat room, and
http://forums.delphi.com/dirttrack/messages
for the forum. We meet in the chat
room on Thursday nights at 7pm, hope to see
you there! We had 70 cars pack the
track, 73 hot lapped, and 78 to run.
#55 Pro Stock Albert Holley dropped out, and
#14H Pro Stock was DQ’d at tech and
not allowed to run (he has no stock frame
crossmember on his car). We were also
told that #71 Chris Matise’s car is the
same way, and he was told to have it fixed
by next week, or he cannot run! We also
had 11 Winged Outlaw Mini Sprints put on
a good show! We had a bunch of cars
come in late that did not pack the track,
all of which started in the rear with the
exception of 3, 2 of which timed in, and
one that never timed in, but still ran with
the pack (not in the rear). I do not
know the details of the above, or why they were
excluded from the rest who did start in the
rear. M1 racing brought out their brand
new Late Model to test (#M1 of course) that
requested the rear.
Now we start off with the first Mini
Stock heat where #27 Scotty Covington went
high in turn #2, hit the dirt on the birm,
and landed in the infield. Caution on the
#5 Herb Champagne (I did not see the hit,
as turn #2 is not clear to me, I sit in turn
#4 and watch the dog leg and turn #4).
#5 Champange went to the rear, and
climbed back up to finish second, with #27
Covington taking the win, and #7 Elvis
Turberville for third. The second Mini
Stock heat found Mr. X doing donuts in
turns 1 & 2! Just couldn’t get that hairpin
curve quite figured out! (With the
exception of the last two weeks, turn #2
has been a problem for most drivers since
this track was enlarged to 3/8, as most of
our accidents, and stolen positions occur
there). #02 Jim Bordeleon took the
win from flag to flag, with #2 second, and Mr. X
figuring it out to take third.
Next are the rough bunch, the first
Pure Stock heat, and again as usual, #3J Ray
Creel drew a good number started outside
pole, and took the win from flag to flag.
#7 Mark Barbara gave him a run for his money
as he tried very hard to get in front,
but just could not get there, and finished
second. #3T David Creel started second
row inside, and battled hard with #07 Bryant
Coyne (who started pole) for third.
#07 Coyne started out third, but then #3T
took it from him. Good race! The
second Pure Stock heat was dominated by #24C
Brett Cressionne who took the win
from flag to flag. #MT2 Jeff Taylor
who started 3rd row inside came to the front to
take second, and #79 Benny Creel who started
dead last came through the pack to
take third, banging on MT2 to try to take
second on the white flag lap, but Taylor
held on to the wheel tight, and was able
to hold on to second!
The UMP Modified heat started off with
#6X Danny Oberwortmann in the lead
until he went high in turn #2 letting #63
Eddie Kerry, and #26C Scott Holt
underneath him. Then #63 Kerry does
the same thing, goes high in turn #2 to let
#26C Scott Holt take the lead to the checkers,
leaving #63 Kerry for second. #63
Kerry again goes high in turn #2 to let #2S
Bobby Semple take third.
The Winged Outlaw
Mini Sprints first heat was taken over by #38 Little Joe
West, who took the win from flag to flag,
Little Joe has heated competition from
second place #96 Amanda Hooks who is only
14 years old, not even old enough to
drive on the street! Third was left
for #78. The second heat started out with #39 in
the lead, only to be bumped by #24 on the
back straightaway on the white flag lap
and lost it to him, leaving #39 for second,
and #8 for third.
The 4 Cylinder Modified heat was dominated
by #27 Scotty Covington in his
first debut in a modified 4 cylinder Mini
Late Model car. #7 Jonathon Clayton had
second, went high in turn #2 to let #25 in
for second, until #25 duplicated his feat
by going high in turn #2 to give second back
to #7 Clayton, leaving #25 for third.
(#25 is a car from Mobile, AL that has come
to race with us over the past few years
from time to time, glad to have him join
us again!). #69 Punkin Taylor hit the wall
coming out of turn #4 and hit the wall hard
and had to leave the race.
The first Street Stock heat was won
by #V4 Brian Crawford from flag to flag!
#D1 Donnie Ellis had second, but his car
was too loose and he went high in turn #2
to let #190 Ron Manley take second. Again
#D1 went high in turn #2 and let #25
inside for third. #5W Angie West took
fourth. The second Street Stock heat had
many good battles! #118 David Scott
battled with #MK81 for second, many times
side by side, and finally got there down
the back straightaway. #10 Snooky Hebert
had the lead for the first few laps until
#118 Scott took it from him all the way to the
checkers. With #10 Hebert in second,
#MK81 and #84 Billy Pretlove battled for
third side by side, until #MK81 got #84 Pretlove
for second, but only for a lap,
when #MK81 took #10 Hebert for second, then
the next lap #84 Pretlove took #10
Hebert for third on the front straightaway,
and then #84 Pretlove took second from
#MK81 on the back straightaway, leaving him
third, and #10 Hebert for fourth.
What a battle it was between these cars!
Many times during this race we had these
cars side by side battling for the position!
Good Race!
The first Super Pro Stock heat started
with #62 James King in the lead, with #23
Melvin Barber for second, and #41 Bobby Helmer
in third. Coming out of turn #4
they go 3 wide, and bump spinning #41 Helmer,
he is called with the caution, and is
sent to the rear. Upon the restart,
it is again #62 James King in the lead, with #23
Melvin Barber for second, #41M Chris Moran
for third, #71 Chris Matise for
fourth, with #41 Bobby Helmer holding the
rear. #71 Matise takes third from
#41M Moran, and #41 Helmer takes fourth from
him also! #23 Barber tries to take
the lead from #62 King on the outside of
turn #4 (we know what turn #4 has done
the last 2 weeks! What a mistake that was)
as he spun into #41 Helmer, and #41
Moran creating a huge pile up! #41M
Moran and #41 Helmer are locked up! After
they clear the wreckage, it remains #62 King
in the lead, with #71 Matise second,
and #V8 Punkin Taylor (joining the mob late)
for third. #V8 Taylor takes second
from #71 Matise in turn #1 then went high
in turn #3 dog leg to give it back to him!
#71 Matise takes the lead from #62 King from
the outside on the back
straightaway. Leaving the finish, #71
Chris Matise, #62 James King (with a bad
miss in the car!), and #V8 Punkin Taylor
for third. The second Super Pro Stock
heat started with a pile up in turn
#2 right from the get go, with #15 Radar (who
drove through the infield), #44 Johnson (landed
in the infield), and #28 Honeycutt
stayed on the track! Upon the restart,
we find #44 Bill Johnson in the lead, with
#15 Radar in second, and #121 Dwayne Balfantz
in third. #28 Phillip Honeycutt
comes from fourth to third the next few laps,
and continues on to take the lead. #15
Radar lost it coming out of turn #4 and spun
sending him into the infield and to the
rear. #7 Bryan Foy who requested the
rear, and started dead last, come up
through the pack to take third, and was side
by side with #121 Balfantz in a race
down the front straightaway to the checkers!
With #7 Foy taking second leaving
#121 Balfantz for third! This
was also a Good Race!
The first Late Model heat started with
#00 Alan Netherland in the lead for the
entire race until the last lap, as #42 Chick
Boyd who came through the pack from
the rear and challenged #00 Netherland at
the checkers! #44 Howard Dempsey
held second until #42 Boyd took second from
him on the front straightaway on his
way to the front. #44 Dempsey held
third until #51 Brian Deroche took it from
him, as #44 Dempsey left the track, leaving
#51 Deroche for third. The second heat
started with #F4 Dwight Falcon in the lead
on the first lap until he went high in turn
#2 letting #W6 Kevin Watts slide in underneath
to take it from him. #3T Threeton
left the track, leaving the finish #W6 Watts
for the win, #F4 Falcon for second, and
#M1 (the brand new car of M1 Racing) for
third.
Now we start the feature races with
the Mini Stock class, where #27 Scotty
Covington takes the win flag to flag.
#02 James Bordeleon takes second from start
to finish, and #5 Herb Champagne for third.
The Pure Stock Feature race will show
you why we call them the Rough Bunch!
It was a race that finished much like the
others in the past with a pile up on the
white flag lap, and another well deserved
Black Flag! I have a brand new
computer, and have a way to take the tape
of the race and add it to my web site
(www.speed-demons.com) so you can see it
yourself, I have not hooked up the
cables yet, but will before this week is
out, believe me, you have to see this one!
This race starts out with #3J Ray Creel with
the win from flag to flag. #24C Brett
Cressionne in second, with #7 Mark Barbara
in third, and #MT2 Jeff Taylor in
fourth. #7 Barbara and #3 hook up and
land in the infield on turns 1 and 2, caution
is called on #7 Barbara, and he is sent to
the rear. Which now leaves the restart
with #3J Creel, #24C Cressionne, #MT2 Taylor,
and #3T David Creel respectfully.
#3T Creel was pushing #MT2 Taylor coming
out of turn #4 and down the front
straightaway for several laps! #37
(orange) lost a wheel and tied up with the #711
on the start of the front straightaway coming
out of turn #4. Very Good Driving on
the part of the lead cars, as they avoided
a major accident, with #7 Barbara and
#K1 head to the infield, and the others going
high. Upon the restart, we have #3J
Ray Creel in the lead with #24C Brett Cressionne
second, #MT2 Taylor in third,
and #3T David Creel in fourth. The
white flag lap heading into the dog leg on the
way to the checkers , #3T David Creel came
across the edge of the infield on the
birm and plowed into #MT2 Jeff Taylor and
kept pushing him until he landed in
the infield in the middle of turns #3 and
#4. #3T David Creel was Black Flagged
for rough driving, and #MT2 Jeff Taylor was
paid for third. The tape of this finish
will be posted this week, we’ll let you know
when.
The UMP Modified Feature was the same
line up from flag to flag! The win goes
to #26C Scott Holt, second to #63 Eddie Kerry,
and third #2S Bobby Semple.
The Winged Outlaw Mini Sprints Feature
found #38 Little Joe West taking the
lead from flag to flag. #24 held second
until his motor died, and he had to leave the
track. #96 Amanda Hooks (14 year old)
started out 4th, and finished second! #39
held third until the last lap when #1 challenged
him and they raced down the front
straightaway to the checkers!.
The Street Stock Feature was another
Good Race! #41 Roger Flynn takes the
win from flag to flag. #84 Billy Pretlove
battles second with #V4 Brian Crawford
throughout the race, side by side, and trading
places back and forth! As #84
Pretlove and #V4 Crawford fight it out side
by side, #118 David Scott sneaks by
both of them to take second and stay there!
#84 Pretlove was Black Flagged for
hitting #V4 Crawford in turn #3 the dog leg,
leaving #V4 to finish third, and #5W
Angie West fourth.
In the 4 Cylinder Modified Feature,
#1 Benny Raynor (I spell it right, the
headlines in the newspaper “Rainer” were
wrong!), timed in pole and stayed out
front for the win! #15 Michael Taylor
tried very hard all day to get around him, but
could not get there, as he had #69 Punkin
Taylor breathing down his neck as well!
The three were in line bumper to bumper most
of the race! The finish was just that
above, with #27 Scotty Covington taking fourth.
The Super Pro Stock Feature was taken
by #41 Bobby Helmer, with #7 Bryan
Foy right on his tail! And #28 Phillip
Honeycutt was all over the back of the #7 Foy
car the entire race (that brand new pretty
car is no longer, it is broke in now!)
#121 Dwayne Balfantz took fourth, with
#V8 Punkin Taylor fifth.
In the Late Model Feature #124 Chris
Cassano started pole, and drove straight
to the checkers without ever looking back!
#F4 Dwight Falcon held second, as #42
Chick Boyd and #W6 Kevin Watts battled it
out for third. They were side by side,
and trading places! By the finish though,
#W6 Watts held onto third for the finish,
giving fourth to #42 Boyd
We rained out for 6/26/99.
Next Weekend is our Fourth of July Championship
Race, Qualifying on Friday
night, with Feature Races Saturday Night!
06/05/99 and 06/12/99
Ok, ya'll read the story
in the newspaper, finally after 4 weeks. And now, put on your
seat belts for a long and exciting
ride! As we had 2 nights of racing in one. Those of us who
got home at 4am, and later,
can relate! On the average, most of our drivers (cars) lose it
in turn #2. They either
lose position, or they go over the wall pushing it too hard, and too
low in turn #1 to come out
of turn #2 too high. However, the second night (our features
night 6/12) the story was turn
#4 and the wall! We had many drivers push too hard in the
dog leg too early only to come
up on turn #4 too wide, and almost hit the wall, or hit the
wall! The Stories this
week in changes were not turn #2, but turn #4, and the wall!
On 'Track Talk" on WTIX
690AM the week of 6/5/99, I didn't have much to say, as
we held our heat races, and
then called the show. This week I will have 2 weeks to cover.
And, we will start this story
that way: On 6/5/99, 89 cars showed and ran for their heat
races only to be called for
rain. They did what no other track has done, and called
it for rain, and announced
that your rain check would be good the next week (6/12). We
all found out on 6/12, that
yes the features from 6/5 would be ran, but our rain checks were
not good. From the driver's
standpoint it was no big deal, as they got paid for 2 features,
and they paid twice to get
in. However, the fans in the stands complained that their tickets
were not good as rain checks.
They had to pay twice to get in regardless, after they were
told on 6/5 to hang on to their
tickets for a rain check. This effort was greatly appreciated
by the drivers, but upset the
general admission. Hey, you can't please everyone.
The track conditions
for 6/5 were very dry slick, like asphalt, some driver told us.
Like ice (of course we had
no rain prior to 6/5). On 6/12, we had more rain than we needed
as it was still raining when
most of us approached the track. Many sat outside to see if we
were really going to race or
not. The infield was flooded, and many went swimming!
We start with the first
Mini Stock heat race of 6/5: Of course, #27 Scotty Covington
takes the lead by storm from
flag to flag. With #28 (silver) taking second, and #28 black
Rusty Wallace for third.
The first Pure Stock
heat had 1 restart and No Cautions! Congratulations guys!
With Mark Barbara #7 taking
the win from flag to flag, with #24C Brett Cressionne second,
and #3T Mark Woodall for third.
The second Pure Stock heat found #3J Ray Creel taking
the lead from flag to flag,
which is no surprise to all of us! Second went to #3T David Creel,
which again is no surprise
to any of us. All year they've had their horseshoe, or rabbits foot,
or whatever in their back pocket,
as they always draw a good number! Congratulations guys!
Keep up the Good Luck!
And of course third went to #79 Benny Creel!
The UMP Modified heat
also had no surprises, as #63 Eddie Kerry took the win
from flag to flag, with #2S
Bobby Semple second, and #7X Vicky McSwain for third.
The first Street Stock
heat found #40 Ronnie Flynn take the lead from flag to flag,
with #V4 Brian Crawford for
second, as #84 Billy Pretlove, and #100 Gary Sellno battled
for third, with #100 winning
the battle at the last lap. The second Street Stock heat found
#41 Roger Flynn take the lead,
with #D1 Donnie Ellis holding second until the white flag
lap, when a flat threw him
out of the game, leaving #14M Danny Martin for second until
#J36 John Schexnayder took
it from him.
The 4 cylinder Modified
heat race found #721 taking the lead by storm from flag to
flag. With #17 Jimmy
Necaise holding second until the white flag lap, when he started
running hot (actually, hot
water from the radiator cap hit him in the face, and he had to pull
off). Leaving #7 Jonathon
Clayton for second and #17 Necaise for third.
The first Super Pro Stock
heat found #V8 Kash Wilson taking the lead, and staying
there, until #43 Patrick Cotton
took it from him, leaving Wilson behind. #23 Melvin Barber
took up the slack and won third.
The second Super Pro Stock heat found #45 Robert
Whittington taking the lead,
only to have #121 Dwayne Balfantz take it from him. The finish:
#121 Balfantz, #41M Brian Moran
second, and #62 James King for third.
The Late Model's first
heat found #9 Duane Degruy taking the early lead, and staying
there. Second went to
#1 Verlon Lee, and third for #56 Campy Holley. The second Late
Model heat found #3T Eddie
Threeton taking the win by storm, and #42 second, and #F4
Dwight Falcon for third.
At this point we were
rained out, and the features carried over until next week (0612).
Which carried a car count of
92. Many of which could not run until the first round of features
were finished. The first
of which was the Mini Stock Feature, which of course had #27
Scotty Covington the favorite
holding the lead from flag to flag. With Stephen Hendry #65
for second and #28 Silver for
third.
The Pure Stock Feature
had #3J Ray Creel as usual in the lead from flag to flag. With
#24C Brett Cressionne close
on his tail for second, and #3t David Creel holding third until the
finish when he had to leave
the track leaving #18 Paul Chauvin took third.
The UMP Modified feature
started with #2 Bobby Semple in the lead, and #63 Eddie
Kerry for second, and #63 Kerry
overtook #2 Bobby Semple for the lead leaving Semple
for second, and #63 Kerry for
the win. #24X Mark Chamal held third all the way.
The Street Stock Feature
had #41 Roger Flynn took the lead from flag to flag, with
#J36 John Schexnayder for second,
and #73 Bob Boyd for third all the way.
The 4 Cylinder Modified
feature found #69 Punkin Taylor in the lead from flag to
flag with 1/2 lead in front
of the pack! #17 Jimmy Necaise held second until he started
spitting water out, and had
to pull off, leaving #15 Michael Taylor for second, and #7
Jonathon Clayton for third.
The Super Pro Stock feature
had #121 Dwayne Balfantz for the win from flag to
flag! Second was held
by the #14H until the white flag lap and he blew up in smoke,
leaving #V8 Kash Wilson for
second, and #28 Phillip Honeycutt for third.
The Late Model Feature
started out with a pile up in turn #1 with #4 Ladner
#44 Howard Dempsey, and #3T
Terry Threeton. Then #F4 took the lead until a pile
up on the front straightaway
sent #9 Duane Degruy swimming in the infield! After the
second restart (which was single
file) #56 Campy Holley came out the winner, and
#F4 Dwayne Falcon for second,
and #1 Verlon Lee for third.
At this point we timed
in the cars at 11:00pm, then waited 45 minutes to start the
Mini Stock heat races!!????
Of course the PA was broke again this evening, as it always
is after any kind of rain.
The Mini Stock's first heat started out with #17 Rickey Rottmann
in the lead, with #B1 Wayne
Everitt second, until #B1 Everitt overtook him for the lead
and stayed there. The
second Mini Stock heat was lead by #02 Jim Bordeleon until
#27 Scotty Covington overtook
him for the lead and stayed there, leaving #02 for second
and #1X Elvis Turberville for
third.
The first Pure Stock
heat had #3J Ray Creel in the lead until he had to leave the
track, leaving the win to #7
Mark Barbara. #18 for second, and #84 Jr. Fricke for third.
The second Pure Stock heat
had No Cautions, and was lead by #24C Brett Cressionne
all the way. #3T David
Creel and #11 Clayton Simpson were fighting for second with Creel
winning the battle, leaving
Simpson for third.
The UMP Modified heat
started out with a pile up in the corner, involving
#34, #6 Mark Hebert, and #18
Paul Jones, but they all walked away from the incident.
Upon the restart, #6 Mark Hebert
took the lead and stayed there flag to flag! #63 Eddie
Kerry held second until #14
(third place) couldn't turn (steering broke) and hit #63 knocking
them both out of the race.
This left #24X Mark Chamal for second, and #2 Bobby Semple
for third.
The 4 Cylinder Modified
heat started out with #7 Jonathon Clayton (pole) in the
lead, with #721 Steve Underwood
for second, and #15 Michael Taylor for third. #7
Clayton lost it in turn #4,
almost hit the wall, leaving #721 Underwood for the lead, and
#15 Taylor for second (giving
Clayton third).
At this point the Street
Stock, Super Pro Stock and Late Model classes hot lapped.
in preparation for their feature
races. The first feature of the second round of features was
of course the Mini Stock Class.
#B1 Wayne Everitt took the lead by storm and left #27
Scotty Covington by 1/2 track!
Only Covington's second defeat of the year (as Elvis
Turberville #1X had got him
once)! Everitt had the class lead by 1/2 track! Third place
was held by #65 Stephen Hendry.
The second feature of
the second round of features was the Pure Stock Feature.
#7 Mark Barbara took the class
by storm, and lead the race from flag to flag! Watch this
one, he's moving up in points!
Good Luck Mark! Second again was the #24C Brett
Cressionne the newcomer to
our track! And third was #3T David Creel.
The UMP Modified Feature
started with #6 Mark Hebert on the pole and in the
lead, but with 2 bad starts,
left #34 in the lead for the win, and #14 second, and #87
for third.
The Street Stock Feature
started out with #84 Billy Pretlove in the lead until he lost
it in turn #4 came close to
the wall, turned to avoid the wall, and then went swimming in
the infield in turn #1, and
believe it or not, got back in line, and held second for 2 laps
then did the same thing, leaving
him swimming at the checkers! This gave #41 Roger Flynn
the win, #118 David Scott second,
and #34 Noah Daspit for third.
The 4 Cylinder Modified
Feature found #15 Michael Taylor (outside pole) in
the lead from flag to flag!
#721 Steve Underwood held second, and #1 Bennie Raynor
for third. They had No
Cautions!!!
The Super Pro Stock feature
found #48 Jason Taylor in the lead from flag to flag!
#71 Chris Wall second from
flag to flag, and #56 Rodney Sheridan for third flag to flag.
No changes in this race!
The Late Model Feature
race was so exciting, i finished the page I was on, and
had to start a new page!
This race made it worth staying up until 3am to watch! Again,
turn #4 and the wall were the
story of this race! #W6 Kevin Watts started out the leader
and took the dog leg and turn
#3 too tight, coming into turn #4 too wide, and almost hit
the wall! He hit the
brakes and stopped short of the wall, if I had a camera I could have
taken a picture of his face,
as he landed right in front of me! #84 David Glass took over
the lead, only to repeat Watts
mistake! But this time, Glass realizing his mistake, knew he
was wide and turned sharp coming
out of turn #3 into turn #4 and right into the pack,
stacking them up like dominoes!
Whenever you see an experienced driver like Watts
or Glass miss a setup, or miss
a turn, or miss judge the track, it makes a novice driver
realize, that this is racing,
no matter how much experience you have! Upon the pile up,
Glass got out of his car (automatic
DQ), and 4 of his pit crew members joined him on the
track (double automatic DQ)!!!!
Upon the restart, the cars remaining finished the race.
#F4 Dwight Falcon (who was
second place) took the lead and stayed there for the win!
#27 Bobby Slaven held second,
and #14 took third., with Alan Netherland #00
taking fourth, and #44 Howard
Dempsey for fifth! Excitement at its best, even if it is
3am!
05/29/99
Over a beautiful full
moon Saturday night, our black clouds left us and moved on.
We had some races with NO CAUTIONS,
and some with Many Cautions! Even a well
deserved black flag (congradulations
to Aubrey who did a great job all night flagging for
us in Jeff's absence!).
With all the new clay added to the track the past few weeks, and
the rain storm that passed
Friday night, the track came in beautifully! Our Mr. Ivy sure
does know how to make them
right! On the down side, we had no tech person (they found some fillers),
and no fuel truck show up.
But, thanks to the great sportsman-
ship of MOST of the drivers,
they all shared what they had! We had 9 cars come in late
and you know what that means!
You start in the rear! You do not show up at Hickory late,
as you will start in the rear!
The PA system got fried in the
storm Friday night and the
tower will no longer give out any information concerning the
time-ins or racing events.
So that means our track record is only through 5/8, and our
time-ins page on this web site
is good through 5/8 also. I'm sorry, as
I was in Charlotte North Carolina
with my family for the week of 5/22, so I did not call
into the radio this week with
a report, as I had none, and there is no info for 5/22. I have
no scoresheets or information
in which to do so. If anyone can write to me and give me
any information as to what
happened on 5/22 for any race, please forward to me email
and I will post it. Before
I left, I told them I was leaving and that
someone would have to call
the radio show, and give me notes from 5/22, but of course
neither got done. On
a happier note, I did get to go to the Charlotte track and watch the
Winston Cup race as well as
the Busch and Arca series races! If you've never been to
a real race, you need to go
at least once! It is truly an experience! Now onto racing 5/29/99!
The first Mini Stock
heat only had one restart as the Jimmy Borderloin in the
orange 02 had to leave the
track. #65 Stephen Hendry lead the race until #27 Scotty
Covington came up the pack
from fourth to take the lead and stay there, leaving #65
Hendry second and #43 Charlie
Monistere for third. In the second heat #41 Phil Brand
started pole and lead the race
until he got a flat tire and landed in the infield on the dog leg
giving the lead to the Jimmy
Borderloin in the orange 05 who held on for the win. Mr. X
and #28 battled for second
real hard with them side by side most of the race. I gave
second to Mr. X with #28 third.
It was so close, you had to be sitting on the flag stand
to really call it!
The first Pure Stock
heat had some serious rivalry going on for the lead. #84 Jr
Fricke, #3t David Creel, and
#3J Ray Creel are 3 wide for the lead & #84 Fricke got
squeezed out to land in the
infield. The next restart #3 Kenneth Hunt takes the lead with
#MT2 Punkin Taylor, #3J Ray
Creel, and #3t David Creel 3 wide for second. #718
Tommy Cannon tried to sneak
in to it also and tangled up with #MT2. Upon the next
restart, #3J Ray Creel takes
the lead with #3 Kenneth Hunt, #MT2 Punkin Taylor, and
#3t David Creel 3 wide for
second. #3 Kenneth Hunt falls back to 3rd with #3t Creel
and #MT2 Taylor side by side
for at least 3 laps fighting for second. #MT2 Taylor
starts to pull ahead of the
#3t David Creel, and #3T Creel comes in hard on turn #3
straight across turn #4 and
drove into #MT2 Taylor into the wall on the white flag lap.
Well, you know what that means,
#3T David Creel got black flagged for rough driving
and #MT2 Taylor takes second
with #3 Kenneth Hunt for third. Heat #2 had its own
share of cautions, as the #3Tii
Mark Woodall who started dead last had his own problems.
He landed in the infield of
the front straightaway, then later got a caution for a flat tire.
#24C took the lead and stayed
there through the cautions. Once the race actually got
started, #7 Mark Barbara took
the lead and stayed there with #24C second and #K1
for third.
The UMP heat had one
restart and then NO CAUTIONS! #26C Scott Holt
took the lead and stayed there
from flag to flag, with #63 Eddie Kerry second and
#6X Danny Oberwortmann for
third.
Now for the biggest surprise
of the evening, BOTH Street Stock heats had NO
CAUTIONS! These drivers
are really maturing and we need to move the name the
WILD BUNCH to the Pure Stock
Class as they are more deserving of it! Even their
feature race this evening only
had ONE CAUTION! CONGRADULATIONS!
#10 Snooky Hebert started the
lead with #614 taking it from him, leaving #10 Hebert
for second until #73 Bob Boyd
took it from him as he fell to third. #38 Special Dr. Bill
Bounds takes third from #10
Hebert. #73 Boyd takes the lead from #614 with 2 laps
to go, leaving the finish:
#73 Boyd, #614 second, and #38 Bounds for third, and #V4
Brian Crawford comes from last
place through the pack to take fourth. #5W Angie
West started the lead for the
second heat, but went high in turn #2 every lap, letting
each other car inside.
#34 Noah Daspit takes the lead from her and stayed there to the
checkers. #100 Gary Sellno
takes second from her, and #40 Ronnie Flynn takes 3rd from
her. #40 Flynn take second
from #100 Sellno with 2 laps to go leaving the finish: #34
Daspit, #40 Flynn second, and
#100 Sellno for third, and #5W West for fourth.
The 4 Cylinder Modified
heat also had NO CAUTIONS! With #721 Steve
Underwood on pole, and taking
the win from flag to flag. #17 Jimmy Necaise held
second and #69 Punkin Taylor
held third until a UJoint broke and dumped the drive shaft
leaving #7 Jonathon Clayton
for third.
The first heat of the
Super Pro Stock class found #23 Melvin Barber in the lead
until #45 Robert Whittington
and he collided sending both of them to the pits. #V8 Kash
Wilson took the lead only to
go high in turn #2 and spin into the infield. This left #41
Bobby Helmer wide open to take
the lead and the win. #14H held second, and #V8
Wilson for third. In
the second heat, #44 Bill Johnson took the lead until #13 overtook
him, leaving Johnson for second.
Then #28 Phillip Honeycutt came and took second from
him, leaving Johnson for third.
#13 spun in turn #2 letting #28 Honeycutt take the lead
from him. #13 came back
from the rear to take second leaving #15 for third. The finish: #28
Honeycutt, #13 and then #15
for third.
The first Late Model
heat had NO CAUTIONS! #F4 Dwight Falcon took the
early lead with #9 Duane Degruy
blocking the rest of the field and taking second. #42
Chick Boyd took third.
In the second Late Model heat, #4 Ladner jumped the start,
causing a restart from there
they had NO CAUTIONS! #4 Ladner lead the race from
flag to flag to the checkers
with #W6 Kevin Watts second and #3T Threeton for third.
With #27 Scotty Covington
starting on the pole, the Mini Stock feature ended with
the same winner as usual.
Second place fell to #65 Stephen Hendry and third to #28.
The crowd was on its
feet for the Pure Stock feature after the battling that went
on in the heat races!
I wish I had a video camera to tape the crowd for this one! And
what a line up it was!!!
#3J Creel #7 Barbara
#3H Hunt
#24C
#718 Cannon #K1
#MT2 Taylor (who
finished second in the heat ????) 07 Bryant
#3t Creel (who
was black flagged in the heat ???)
#3TiiWoodall
Mac #11 (who never
ran a heat???) #00
#84
The reason this line
up is published is because of its signifigance. You finish second
and end up in the 4th row,
you get black flagged and aren't in the rear, and you never run
a heat race, but line up ahead
of #00 and #84 ?? Only the shadow knows!!
#3J takes the lead, with
#3 Hunt and #7 Barbara fighting for second, the two tangle
up in turn #2 and #3 Hunt takes
the caution. The second caution, #84 Fricke, #07 Bryant
and #3Tii pile up in turn #3.
During the line up after this caution #3J Creel incurs a flat
tire, and the crowd was
on its feet jumping up and down on those new bleachers
screaming at the corner man
Todd Corkern that #3J had a flat! After #3J goes to the
pits, #7 Barbara take the lead,
with #24C second and #MT2 Taylor for third. The
two leaders get caught up in
lap traffic and #MT2 comes around the outside to challenge
the lead. They race to
the checkered flag, and #7 Barbara takes the win! #MT2 Taylor
takes second and #24C takes
third. Now that was a real race!!! The fans loved it!!!
The UMP feature was uneventful
and but had NO CAUTIONS! Scott Holt in
the #26C takes the win flag
to flag, with #6x Danny Oberwortmann on his heels, but
has to settle for second, and
the #63 Eddie Kerry for third.
The Street Stock feature
only had one caution when the #14M Danny Martin
spun into the infield.
#40 Flynn takes the lead then loses it coming out of turn #4 giving
the lead to #V4 Brian Crawford
who stayed there to the checkers. #40 Flynn has to
settle for second, and #41
Flynn takes third.
The 4 Cylinder Modified
feature had the line up:
#721 #17
#7 #789
#4 #7C (who never ran the
heat)
#69
How can you not run a
heat race and still end up in line??? The finish of the heat
is how you start in the feature
if you draw numbers??? It didn't matter anyway in this
particular race. #721
Underwood sitting on the pole took the win flag to flag, with #7
Clayton for second, and #17
Necaise for third. Only one caution on the #4 Hunt who
died on the back straightaway!
#69 Taylor tried to get #17, but they both ran the same
groove all night on the track,
and #69 just couldn't get there, leaving #69 Taylor fourth.
The Super Pro Feature
found #43 Patrick Cotton take the win from flag to flag.
#14H held second until he died
on the restart, giving second to #41 Bobby Helmer.
#28 Phillip Honeycutt held
third until he went high in turn #4 letting #V8 Kash Wilson
in for third, leaving #28 Honeycutt
for fourth.
The Late Model feature
was an awesome race between the two lead cars! #W6
Kevin Watts took the lead with
#124 knocking on his door on every lap! But, #124
had to settle for second, with
#56 Campy Holley for third, and #42 Chick Boyd for fourth.
05/15/99
We got up early this
morning to finish the car, wash it, do the radio talk show on
WTIX 690 at 10:30am, then ran
to Harahan to show the car at the WTIX car show. We
had a good turnout, as #41
Bobby Helmer brought his car, #99 Pike County Late Model,
Dallas Kirkfield and his son
brought their V8 Sprint cars, and Sharon Trosclair brought
her mini stock car from the
Westbank, and a set of rules, so soon I will have the rule book
for the Westbank online as
well. The crawfish was great, and we passed out all of our
flyers, and then rushed
back here to make it to the track on time
to run. Track records
are now updated (including last year to 5/8/99). I dug through all
the records from last year
to date to calculate track record. As of 5/15/99 the track will
not give out any information,
including driver's names, DQ's, track time-in times, etc.,
so if your name is wrong, or
missing please check the ROSTER
and send me an email
to that effect so I can correct
it. Also, if a car was DQ'ed and did not win where I placed
them, please let me know, because
I no longer receive that information from the tower.
I also don't have any manes
for the Winged Outlaw Mini Sprints that ran 5/15, please
have someone contact me for
their names. Ok, now lets talk racing!! New Clay and
Bleachers have been added to
greatly enhance the track!
In the first Mini Stock
heat, I have no cautions marked. As #27 Scotty Covington
took first, #05 Shane Hill
second, and #A1 Richard Mathis third. In the second heat,
#35 had handling problems all
night. They had 2 restarts resulting in single file for the
third. Wayne Wimberely
#4 took the lead and stayed there. The orange #02 Jim
Bordeloin held second until
his drive shaft fell out on the front straightaway, dragging his
car across the checkered flag
to end up third. #A2 Robert Mathis beat him across the
line to take second.
The Winged Outlaw Mini
Sprints heat had #38 and #39 battling back and forth
for first place, with #39 taking
the win, and #38 second, and #22 for third.
The Pure Stock's first
heat had NO CAUTIONS! #3Tii Mark Woodall took the
win flag to flag, and #13 Mark
Hebert held second until the last lap when #7 Mark Barbara
took second from him leaving
Hebert for third. The second heat race was not as easy, with
2 laps completed, they called
for a complete restart and started all over again. #07 Coyne
Bryant lead the first lap,
and MT2 Jeff Taylor lead the second lap. Upon the restart, #76
Steven King took the lead,
then stopped dead in a cloud of smoke in turn #2 (caution).
The next start M1 jumped the
start then landed in the infield in turn #4 after dumping alot
of water out onto turn #4,
then started after it again. #07 Coyne Bryant jumped back in
the lead until MT2 took it
over, leaving the finish MT2 Jeff Taylor for first, and #07 Coyne
Bryant for second, and #M1
for third.
In the UMP heat #63 Eddie
Kerry took the win from flag to flag, with #224 Todd
Cassano for second, and #12X
and #6X Danny Oberwortmann fighting for third. #12X
landed in the infield, leaving
#6X Danny Oberwortmann for third.
The first Street Stock
heat had #K1 JD Kirby take the early lead, but broke and
had to be towed off the track.
#14M Danny Martin took the lead next only to have #38
Glen Stanga take it away from
him. Leaving the finish, #38 Glen Stanga, #41 Roger Flynn
second, and #118 David Scott
for third. The second heat found #J36 John Schexnayder
for the win flag to flag, with
#40 Ronnie Flynn sliding by #5W for second, leaving #5W
Angie West for third.
The 4 Cylinder Modified
heat had NO CAUTIONS! #17 Jimmy Necaise took
the win flag to flag, with
#721 Steve Underwood for second, and #69 Punkin Taylor for
third.
The Super Pro Stock first
heat found #41M Bryan Moran take the early lead, with
#41 Bobby Helmer close behind,
that took the lead from him. Leaving the finish #41 Bobby
Helmer first, #41M Bryan Moran
second, and #121 Dwayne Balfantz for third. The
second heat had several leaders,
with #20B Stanley Sims taking the early lead, with #44
Bill Johnson taking it from
him, and then #28 Phillip Honeycutt taking it from Johnson.
Leaving the finish #28 Phillip
Honeycutt for first, #V8 Brian Crawford for second, and
then #44 Johnson for third.
The first Late Model
heat had a bad start which left #56 Campy Holley in the
infield, and restarted, to
have NO CAUTIONS, after the restart. The finish #84 David
Glass for the win, and #1 Verlon
Lee for second, and #F4 Dwight Falcon for third. The
second heat found #3T Terry
Threeton take the early lead, but then lost it in turn #4, and
then spun in turn #2.
#9 Duane Degruy took the lead, only to give it up to #W6 Kevin
Watts. The finish, #W6
Kevin Watts for first, #9 Duane DeGruy for second, and #51
Brian Deroche for third.
The Mini Stock Feature
race again had #27 Scotty Covington take the win from
flag to flag, with #4 Wayne
Wimberley for second, and the #02 Jimmy Bordeloin for third.
The #35 Flipped end over end,
then rolled down the hill of turn #2 (new car, new paint
job). Turn two seems
to have a jinx on new paint jobs (haha).
The Winged Outlaw Mini
Sprints (2 stroke motorcyle engines) feature again found
#38 and #39 battling for first,
and #22 and #24 battling for second, sometimes side by side.
The finish #38 for first, #39
for second, #24 for third, and #22 for fourth.
The Pure Stock feature
found #7 Mark Barbara leading the race until he lost it
in turn #4! That gave
the lead to #3T David Creel, and second to MT2 Jeff Taylor,
and third to #3tii Mark Woodall.
The UMP feature found
#224 Troy Cassano for first, #6X Danny Oberwortmann
for second, and #12X for third.
In the Street Stock feature
#84 Billy Pretlove held the lead until he spun out in
turn #4 piling up all the others
behind him! Out of the wreckage came #118 David Scott
for the win, #J36 John Schexnayder
for second, and #5W Angie West who came from
the rear from an earlier caution
to take third.
The 4 Cylinder Modified
feature found #17 Jimmy Necaise to take the win from
flag to flag, with #15 Michael
Taylor for second, and #7 Jonathon Clayton for third.
The Super Pro feature
was taken by #41 Bobby Helmer from flag to flag! #28
Phillip Honeycutt took second
and #V8 Kash Wilson for third.
The Late Model feature
found #1 Verlon Lee take the win from flag to flag! #124
held second until #W6 Kevin
Watts took second from him, and #F4 Dwight Falcon took
third from him, when he spun
in turn #4.

The Mini
Stock class had a rude awakening this week as they passed through
tech! Thoroughly!
Previously, we did not have a P & G adaptor for the Ford 2.3,
but we do now! And actually,
none were DQed due to the P & G test, they were
DQed for other reasons.
Some had solid cam setups instead of hydraulic, and
most did not weigh what was
required for their class! Some had illegal carburetors,
and even one had a roller cam
setup, better than the 4 cylinder modifieds! Our
rule book states "stock as
produced for make and model", which on a Ford 2.3
OHC that means "hydraulic cam
setup". Carburetors are limited to 350 CFM.
That does not include Holley
500, 4412. Weight rule for the class is 2400#
minimum, (which has been changed
to one pound per cc, to be the same as all
the other tracks around here).
They told the class, they must fix
their cars by next week or
he will DQ them. A note of bad news, Mr. Floyd Fricke
had another heart attack, please
keep him to your prayers this week.
The Mini Stock's first
heat had NO Cautions! #01 Herb Champagne
started out in the lead, but
was taken over by Scotty Covington #27. Champagne
held second until the end of
the race, when #A1 Richard Mathis got around
him and left Champagne for
third. In the second heat, 1X Elvis Turbeville
started in the lead, but left
abruptly as his engine broke a cam tower. #22
Alvin King took over the lead,
but briefly, as #4 Wayne Wimberley quickly
took first and stayed there,
leaving King second. #33 RJ Strain held third until
the last lap, when #A2 Robert
Mathis came up from last place to take third from
him, leaving Strain fourth.
The first Pure Stock
heat was quiet until the last lap. #3Tii Mark Woodall
held first, with #3T(blue)
David Creel holding second, and #7 (blue) Mark
Barbara in third. All
three of these cars went 3 wide in turn #2, Barbara ran out
of room on the track and went
off the track. Leaving Creel first, Woodall second
and #07 (white) Bryant Coyne
for third. The second Pure Stock heat had NO
Cautions! #96 Gary Sharp
takes the win from flag to flag, with #MT2 Jeff
Taylor for second, #3J Ray
Creel for third, and #76 Steven King trying to get
third, but remained fourth.
The UMP heat was the
same all day, with Scott Holt #26C taking the
win from flag to flag, and
#3X Bill Gordon in second, and #7 Carl McKnight
in third.
The first Street Stock
heat had 2 restarts, and then restarted again in
single file. #41 Roger
Flynn takes the win flag to flag. #20f Richard Mathis
holds second until 2 laps to
go, when #V4 Brian Crawford takes it from him,
and #10 Snooky Hebert slides
in for third, leaving Mathis for fourth. The
second Street Stock heat had
its problems as well. #K1 JD Kirby starts off in
first place, with #42 Lewis
Warran in second and #9 Louis Morales in third.
Morales spins in turn #2, giving
#26 Jason Prieto third, until he spins in
turn #2, giving #5W Angie West
third. #42 Lewis Warran takes the lead from
#K1 Kirby, leaving him second
and West for third.
The 4 Cylinder Modified
heat had NO Cautions! #15 Michael Taylor
jumped in the lead until turn
#2, he swung up high leaving room for #17 Jimmy
Necaise to slide in underneath,
and he never looked back! Leaving Taylor for
second and #721 Steve Underwood
for third. At tech, #15 Taylor was light, and
was told to get his weight
up to spec before the feature race!
The first heat of the
Super Pro Stock class found #23 Melvin Barber
jumping out for the lead for
the first lap, until he went high in turn #2 letting
#42 Punkin Taylor inside to
take the lead from him. #42 Punkin Taylor held
the lead until the checkers,
when the leaf spring mounts broke giving him 2 rear
flat tires, and he tried to
cross the checkered flag, but couldn't make it there.
#23 Barber takes the win, with
#55 second, and #19 Ray Creel for third. The
second Pro Stock heat found
#8 Gary James for the win from flag to flag.
#44 Bill Johnson held second
and #28 Phillip Honeycutt tangled up with him
in turn #2, sending Honeycutt
to the rear. Honeycutt came from the rear back
up to third, and wheel hopped
#44 Johnson to take second, leaving him third.
In the Late Model heat,
#9 Duane Degruy's car was driven by Jonathon
Clayton (4 cylinder modified
#7) and requested the rear. #96 DJ Hawkins from
Alabama took the lead, until
second place #W6 Kevin Watts takes it from him
on the inside of turn #3.
The #21 Donald Morel flipped is car end over end, and
then side over side in turns
#1 and #2!!! He was recovered fine. As the race
continued, Watts #W6 for first,
#96 Hawkins for second, and #82 Wade Glass
for third.
The Mini Stock feature
had one restart, and then NO Cautions! Scotty
Covington #27 held the lead
from flag to flag. #4 Wayne Wimberley held
second until #1X Elvis Tuberville
took it from him, leaving Wimberley third.
The Pure Stock feature
found #3Tblue, David Creel for the win, with
#96 Gary Sharp for second,
and #3J Ray Creel for third. #96 Sharp weighed
too light, and was DQed, leaving
second to Creel, and #76 Steven King for third.
The UMP feature race
had one caution due to debris on the track, the
drivers had NO Cautions!
Scott Holt #26C took the early lead, only to give it
up to #3x Bill Gordon, leaving
Holt for second, and #7 Carl McKnight for
third.
The Street Stock feature
had plenty of cautions (the wild bunch they are
called, and they lived up to
it tonight!). We started with K1 JD Kirby spun out
in turn #2, then upon the restart,
there was a pile up in turn #2, with #K1, #20f,
and #14M. Kirby was seriously
hurt! He refused to go to the hospital, and the
race continued. #84 Billy
Pretlove took the lead and stayed there to the checkers.
#34 Noah Daspit held second
throughout, and #41 Roger Flynn came from the
rear (after a caution on him)
to take third. #34 Noah Daspit was DQed for being
too light, which left second
to Flynn, and third for #V4 Brian Crawford.
The 4 Cylinder Modified
class gave #17 Jimmy Necaise the win from
flag to flag! Leaving
second for #15 Michael Taylor, and third to #69 Punkin
Taylor. #69 wheel hopped
the #15 to try to take second, but could never get
there. #15 Michael Taylor
was DQed for being too light, leaving second to
#69 Punkin Taylor, and third
for #721 Steve Underwood.
The Super Pro Stock feature
had NO Cautions! #41 Roger Flynn took
the win from flag to flag,
with #28 Phillip Honeycutt for second, and #19 Ray
Creel for third. #28
Honeycutt and #19 Creel were DQed for being too light,
moving #55 to second, and #121
Dwayne Balfantz to third.
The Late Model feature
had NO Cautions! #82 Wade Glass took the win
from flag to flag, with #W6
Kevin Watts for second, and #1 Verlon Lee for third.
The Demolition Derby
was a great show! #99 James Howell took first,
with #V6 Dave Howell for second
(both sponsored by Gary's Towing), and
#15 Jim Tallery (NAPA) took
third.
This week, after the "Track Talk" radio
show, WTIX 690 am is hosting a
Crawfish boil and Car Show at the Pit Stop
on Jefferson Highway, from 12 noon
until 2pm! Punkin Taylor and Cindy
Douglas plan to go show their 4 Cylinder
Modified (Mini Late Model), and join in the
fun! Also, the Winged Outlaw Mini
Sprints will be at this week, so come on
out and join in the
fun!
May Day, May 1st, 1999
Compliments of Elizabeth Bryan
Photography,
As the beautiful orange
full moon hung in the sky, the spirits were out in full force. We
had a mixed field of cars and
drivers, as some races were
ran without a single caution, while others had many.
We had cautions, conflicts,
and even some black flags flying! Remember, no
matter how the calls are made,
(either bad or good), they are the calls made,
and you can not change them.
This weekend prompted me to write a commentary
relating to what qualities
must a driver have to be a GOOD Driver? I've been
thinking that each week on
the web site, we will have a question to be responded
by you, the drivers, pit crews,
spectators, etc. See www.speed-demons.com.
As for the controversial calls,
I will report what I saw, and how it happened from
my end of the track.
Calls made on the other end of the track, I can not see close
enough to make any determination,
or opinion.
We start the evening
off with the Mini Stock 4 banger heat race. Elvis
Turbeville, gave Scotty Covington
a run for his money, as the two battled it
out trading places for first.
Elvis could not hold on, and the win goes to Covington,
with Elvis second, and Jimmy
Bordeleon for third.
The first Pure Stock
heat had NO Cautions! Steve King takes the win from
flag to flag. Ray Creel
takes second from 3Tii, leaving him third. Of course, the
second Pure Stock race was
not as smooth. After 2 restarts, they have to restart
again single file, with #84
Billy Stewart taking the lead and staying there for the
checkers! Second place
for David Creel #3T Blue, and third for #3 Kenneth Hunt.
The first UMP heat had
NO Cautions! #89 Gregg Thurman took the win from
flag to flag, with 1/2 track
separating him from the rest of the field. #R3 Ricky Whittington
took 2nd from #18 Paul Jones,
leaving him third. Jerry Cassano #C24 took the second heat on 2
wheels again! Troy Cassano
#224 ran off the track in turn 2 to be retrieved unharmed.
#6 Mark Hebert held second,
with Eddie Kerry #63 holding third.
The first Street Stock
heat had a crucial crash on the white flag lap, as the #57
got black flag for being in
the way of the leaders as he was being lapped. Due to the
crash caused on the white flag
lap, the finish reverted back to the previously recorded lap.
Great idea! We are plagued
with having the reputation of many hard core white flag laps
that result in tragedies.
K1 held the lead until 2 laps to go, when #41 Roger Flynn took
the lead from him, leaving
him second, and Bryan Crawford #V4 for third. The second
Street Stock race was lead
by #10x Norm Simpson in Red White & Blue, until he
went high in turn #2 letting
#18 Paul Chauvin in for the lead for one lap. After a caution
#44 Billy Stewart jumped in
the lead, leaving Chauvin for second, and #118 David Scott
for third.
The 4 cylinder Modified
(Mini Late Models!) heat had NO Cautions. #15 Michael
Taylor jumped in for the early
lead, and went all the way to the checkers! #721 Steve Underwood
started the race in second,
and held it there, #69 Punkin Taylor tried to get
around Underwood inside, outside,
all around, but couldn't do it, and stayed in third, with
Jimmy Necaise #17 for fourth.
The first Super Pro Stock
heat found Patrick Cotton #43 taking the lead and
the checkers. #28 Phillip
Honeycutt took second from #4G Walter Gibbs leaving
him third. In the second
heat, #44 Bill Johnson started out with the lead for the first
lap, went high in turn #2 letting
#42 Punkin Taylor inside to take the lead and stay
there for the checkers.
#19 Ray Creel takes second from Johnson, leaving him
third.
On the first Late Model
heat, Jerry Simpson #284 takes the lead, with #84 David
Glass second, and they stay
there all the way to the checkers. Kevin Watts #W6 goes
high in the dog leg letting
Duane Degruy #9 slip in and take third, leaving Watts for
fourth. The second Late
Model heat started with Terry Threeton #3T in the lead with
#82 Wade Glass for second,
and Dwight Falcon F4 third. They go 3 wide through
the dog leg and turns 3 &
4. #F4 Dwight Falcon comes out the leader (by 1/2 track) and
stays there to take the checkers,
with #3T Threeton second. Jody Miller #5 works his way
up from the back of the pack
to take third from #82 Wade Glass and leave him fourth.
The 4 cylinder Mini Stock
feature race found #27 Scotty Covington taking the win
from flag to flag, with #1X
Elvis Turberville knocking on the door, but could never get in,
leaving him to finish second,
and #65 Stephen Hendry for third.
The Pure Stock feature
race had 3 restarts without going single file!? On the last
restart, they already completed
one full lap, and the leaders had crossed the flagman
before the caution giving them
2 laps down, but they restarted again side by side? So,
after they really get started,
Stephen King #76 took the lead, and stayed there all day
for the win! #84 Billy
Stewart held second until the last lap, when #3J Ray Creel
took it from him, and left
him third.
In the UMP feature Jerry
Cassano #C24 took the lead by storm, with 2 wheeled
corners! #89 Gregg Thurman
held down second place, while #6 Mark Hebert held third throughout!
They
had no cautions after their
restarts.
The Street Stock feature
had 2 restarts, and had to start over single file! Billy Stewart
in Paul Lyons #44 car, took
the lead by storm, with #41 Roger Flynn, in second, and #40
Ronnie Flynn for third.
#40 Ronnie Flynn takes second from #41 Roger Flynn. #40 Ronnie
Flynn cuts low on the inside
of the dog leg, to try to take first from Stewart, and pushed him
up into the dirt. As
the two connect, Flynn's car hooked onto Stewart's car and spun the
#40 car around him, landing
in the dirt. The caution was called on the #40 car by the
spotters on the track, but
they were overruled, and the caution was placed on #44 Stewart????
And, the deputies were told
to escort him off the property??? (As the track turns, sounds
like a good soap story?)
After all the commotion is cleared, the restart found #118 David Scott
in first, #41 Roger Flynn in
second, #V4 Bryan Crawford third, with #84 Billy Pretlove fourth.
Scott and Flynn go two wide
for 2 laps fighting for first, with Flynn taking the checkers.
V4 Bryan Crawford second, and
#118 Scott for third.
The 4 Cylinder Modified
(Mini Late Models) class had a tough time getting started,
as they had 4 restarts to get
the race going! Everyone wanted first place! The front leaders
#15 Michael Taylor, #721 Steve
Underwood, and #69 Punkin Taylor traveled 3 wide around
the track! It was a pretty
site, although they never made a full lap that way! #721 got loose
coming down the straightaway,
then coming out of turn #2 (twice). After they finally got
started, #15 Michael Taylor
took the lead and stayed there for the checkers. #69 Punkin
Taylor's steering broke, and
watch the remainder of the race from the infield. #17 Jimmy
Necaise held second all the
way. #7 Clayton drover over the top of #721 Underwood's
car sending Underwood into
the infield, leaving third for #7 Clayton, and #721 Underwood
for fourth.
The Super Pro feature
found #50 black flagged for 3 cautions as he spun out.
Bobby Helmer #41 held the lead
from flag to flag, with #28 Phillip Honeycutt for second.
#43 Patrick Cotton cut in on
#14 Brian Anthony and they gave the caution to #14????
Leaving third for #41M Brian
Moran.
#F4 Dwight Falcon takes
the Late Model feature win from flag to flag! #9 Duane
Degury holds second until two
laps to go, when he lost it in turn #4, and goes to the rear,
letting #82 Glass in for second,
and #W6 Kevin Watts for third.

All classes (except Late Models) drew
numbers and then fought during the
heat races for position in the feature races.
We had some races ran with no
cautions! But, then we also had 3 roll
overs! Our roll-over fund was depleated
and replenished 3 times!
The Mini Stock Heat finally found someone
to beat Scotty Covington
#27. The #1X Elvis Turbeville takes
the win from flag to flag, with Scotty
Covington #27 second, and #02 Jimmy Bordeleon
for third.
The first Pure Stock heat had the #11
take the win flag to flag, #07

to flag on 2 wheels through
the corners! Second #26C Scott Holt,
and #3 Neil Kemp third.
The first Street Stock heat was taken
over by Noah Daspit #34 from
flag to flag. #5W Angie West fought
off #41 Roger Flynn the for second
place throughout the whole race until the
last lap, when she lost her wheel
in the dog leg going into turn #3.
The wheel flew into the tech area, bounced
off the wall and hit Todd Corkern dislocating
his shoulder. The EMTs put
his shoulder back into place, taped up his
ribs, and he continued to work the
rest of the evening! Roger Flynn #41
ended up second, and #36 John
Schexnayder took third. The second
Street Stock heat found #V4 Bryan
Crawford with the win from flag to flag.
The 20i car driven by Tony Grafia
flew off the track in turns #3 and #4 toward
the tech area, and rolled over
5 times! No one was hurt, as he took
down the power lines and lights for
the tech area on his way! David Scott
#118 took second, and #9 Louis
Morales took third.
The 4 cylinder modified heat had NO
cautions! Punkin Taylor #69
took the win flag to flag with Steve Underwood
finishing second. Jimmy
Necaise #17 tried all night to get inside,
outside and all around #721, but
couldn't get in and ended up third.
The first Super Pro Stock heat had
NO cautions! Kash Wilson #V8 led
the whole race until 2 laps to go, when #63
Michael Ladner took the lead
from him, leaving Wilson second, and #12

Super Pro Stock heat found Punkin Taylor
#42 leading the way until the white
flag lap, when Albert Holley #14 got by him
leaving Taylor second, and #23
Melvin Barber for third.
The Late Model Heat had NO cautions!
Terry Threeton #3T takes
the win flag to flag. #11 Cliff Darby
held second, with #F4 Dwight Falcon
for third.
Mini Stock feature saw Elvis Turberville
#1X take the win flag to flag.
#A1 Richard Mathis held second all the way.
Both of them got into lap
traffic, and #86 and #1X collide and spun
the #86 flipping him over and
he rolled it 4 times down the front straightaway!
#27 Scotty Covington
took third.
The Pure Stock feature was led by Jeff
Taylor #MT2 from flag to flag.
Second #11, and third 38C Jimmy Moody.
The UMP feature had the crowd on its
feet, as #C24 Jerry Cassano
won flag to flag, running in the 16:20's,
on 2 wheels through the corners!
Second #224 Troy Cassano, and #26C Scott
Holt for third.
The Street Stock feature had more cautions
than I care to write! The
07 White/Yellow car caught on fire in turn
#2 and hooked up with Danny
Martin #14M, as Martin went over the birm,
off the track, and rolled down
the hill! #34 Noah Daspit took the
win, with #41 Roger Flynn fighting close
behind, but remained second, and #36
John Schexnayder for third.
The 4 cylinder modified feature found
Punkin Taylor #69 with the
win flag to flag. #721 Steve Underwood
tried all he had to try to get inside,
outside, and all around Taylor. On
the white flag lap, heading toward the
checkers, Taylor and Underwood were coming
in side by side, when #721
started popping fire out the tail pipe, and
Underwood couldn't hold on to it.
Leaving the finish: #69 Taylor, #17 Jimmy
Necaise, and #7 Jonathon
Clayton for third.
Michael Ladner #63 won the Super Pro
Stock feature from flag to flag.
Albert Holley #14 took second all the way.
Scott Holt in the #41 Bobby
Helmer car held third.
Kevin Watts #W6 held the lead for the
win flag to flag, with #F4
holding second, and #5 Jody Miller coming
from behind to take third.
The girls really put on a show for
the Powder Puff race, as Donna
Everitt in the B1 took the win, with Niki
Creel #3J won second, and
Brandy Yarborough took third.

Allen Netherland joined us Saturday
night
in Hickory/Lacombe Louisiana. Allen
drives the Late Model 00 car, and his
car fell on his face a few weeks ago, leaving
him in serious condition. It was
great to see him back on his feet!
The Mini Stock's first heat race had
a hard time getting started. The first restart was
caused by the #88 lagging behind for the
green flag, then
Herb Champagne in the Orange 01 car ran off
the back of turn #2, and
then Robert Mathis in the A2 car air cleaner
fell off, causing them to restart
again, this time single file. Scott
Covington again was the leader, with BJ
Watts in the #21, and Herb Champagne in the
Orange 01, fighting back and
forth for second until the white flag lap,
when Champagne finally got him for
the checkers. The second heat had less
problems, with Wayne Wimberley #4
holding the lead from flag to flag.
Richard Mathis in the A1 tried to get him
and never could, he had to settle for second.
The #02 fought Crayton Dufrene in the #11
hard for second and finally acheived it,
leaving Dufrene third.
Punkin Taylor in the MT2 took the first
Pure Stock heat from flag to
flag, as Billy Stewart #84, Eddie Threeton
#3T, and Ray Creel #3J fought
for second. Threeton #3t spun out in
turn #2, leaving second to Stewart
with Ray Creel #3J for third. The red
#6 took the win flag to flag, in the second heat, with
Kenneth Hunt #3H second, and the green #13
for third.
Scott Holt lost his first UMP Modified
race of this season, with Eddie Kerry #63
taking the win flag to flag. Holt had
second until he went high in turn #2 giving it up to Chris
Burt #5 for a short time, but then regained
it. The finish, Kerry, Holt, Burt.
John Schexnayder in the J36 won the
first Street Stock heat flag to
flag, with Bryan Crawford in the V4 second
flag to flag. Bob Boyd #73
started the race in third, then spun out
in turn #4 into Roger Flynn #41
sending Flynn into the infield, and Boyd
to the rear. Paul Lyons #44
held third until the white flag lap, where
he traveled down the infield along
the back straightaway from turn #2 to turn
#3 to try to keep third, but
the caution was called on him for racing
in the infield, and Roger Flynn
#41 ended up with third. Donnie Stewart
#D55 won the second heat, with
Ronnie Flynn #40 second, and Gary Sellno
#100 third from flag to flag.
Jimmy Necaise #17 won the 4 cylinder
Modified heat flag to flag, with
Steve Underwood #721 second, and Punkin Taylor
#69 holding third. Then
Taylor #69 caught fire down the back straightaway
on the white flag lap,
causing the red flag to fly. The pit
crew had changed jets on the carburetor
and one of the bowl screws backed out leaking
gasoline onto the headers.
Taylor #69 was not hurt, and there was very
little damage done to the car, as
he made it back out for the feature!
On the restart, Jonathon Clayton #7 took third.
Kevin Kennedy in the 26K Stock Ford
Inline 6 cylinder won the first
Pro Stock heat, with Chuck Lavignette #11
second and Gary James #8 for
third. John Taylor #10 started the
lead in the second Pro Stock heat, then
spun in turn #2 into Dwayne Balfantz #121,
sending Balfantz to the pits,
and Taylor to the rear. Jay Ladner
#4 took over the lead with Bill Johnson
#44 second and Bobby Helmer #41 for third.
KI Davis in Steve Milstead's #22 took
the early lead in the Late Model
heat, until he hooked up with second place
Chris Wall #71 in turns #2 and
#4, causing both of them to fall to the rear.
Wade Glass #82 took over
the lead with Lipsey #85 second and Jody
Miller #5 for third.
The Mini Stock feature started off
with a bang, with Wayne Wimberley
#4 spun in turn #2 hitting the orange #02
and Charlie Monistere #43 both
head on, sending all 3 of them to the pits!
Scott Covington took the win
flag to flag with Richard Mathis #A1 second
and Herb Champagne #01
for third.
Punkin Taylor in the MT2 took the Pure
Stock Feature flag to flag,
with Billy Stewart #84 on his tail all the
way, until he had to leave the track.
#6 and Ray Creel #3J battled for third, and
when Stewart left the track,
Creel got second by bypassing #6. Leaving
the finish: Taylor MT2,
Ray Creel #3J second, and #6 for third
Again Eddie Kerry took another win
away from Scott Holt #26C as
Kerry won the UMP Modified feature from flag
to flag. Scott Holt #26C
for second, and Chris Burt #5 for third.
The Street Stock feature couldn't get
started, as the drivers halted
their cars on the track for a pit meeting
in the middle of the track! It seems
that Ron Manley #190 (Dupont colored car)
arrived at the track at 10
minutes til 6 (legal), and was in line with
several other cars to pack the
track, but was not allowed on the track by
the track officials, as the track
was already packed, and they decided to clear
the track and start racing.
The other drivers in the Street Stock feature
did not have all the above
details and they halted the line up of the
race because #190 was allowed to
time in and race, although he did not pack
the track. During this meeting
it was obvious to the track officials that
Gary Sellno #100 did not have a
fire suit on, so he was told to leave the
track, and he did as he did donuts
to get there. Let's remember folks,
that the safety rules of the track are
for your benefit. We already had a
car catch fire on the track once tonite,
and last year we had a car go off the track
and blow up! Not wearing a
fire suit can be life threatening!
He had on a cotton flannel shirt, with
cotton flannel pants, and tennis shoes (Very
Flamable)! A caution to the
other tracks that he races at, beware!
So, finally we get to start the Street
Stock heat race, with who we thought was
Paul Lyons #44, but at the end
of the race, when he got out of the car for
the picture, it was none other than
Billy Stewart! Taking the win flag to flag
in the #44! Ron Manley #190 and
Bryan Crawford #V4 battle for 2nd, with Crawford
finally taking second from
Manley, leaving Manley for third, and Donnie
Stewart #D55 fourth. Stewart
#D55 and Manley #190 tie up in turn #2 causing
Manley #190 to go to the
rear, and leaving Stewart third. And
that is your finish: Billy Stewart in #44
first, Bryan Crawford #V4 second, and Donnie
Stewart #D55 third.
The line up for the 4 Cylinder Modified
feature was changed, as they
had problems with the stop watches again,
and 3 drivers got 2 laps to time
in, and 3 only got one lap to time in.
Moving the #7 Jonathon Clayton up
3 places to Pole, and moving Punkin Taylor
#69 from Pole to outside pole.
Clayton #7 and Taylor #69 stay side by side
through turns #1 and #2, when
Taylor #69 got ahead of Clayton coming out
of turn #2, and stayed in the
lead for the remainder of the race!
Steve Underwood #721 was third, until
turn #4, when he got around Clayton #7 to
take second and stay there!
Jimmy Necaise #17 who started out fourth,
took Clayton #7 on the white
flag lap to give Necaise third for the finish!
Chris Matise #71 takes the early lead
in the Pro Stock feature, with
Stanley Sampson #20B close behind in second.
Matise goes high in turn
#2 letting Sampson #20B inside for the lead.
After Chuck Lavignette #11
spins in turn #2 (this pretty car had most
of its sheet metal peeled off by
the end of the evening), the restart after
the caution, in turn #3 Sampson
#20B goes high letting Matise take back the
lead, with Phillip Honeycutt #28
close behind to take second, and Gary James
#8 to take third.
The Late Model's weren't ready to start
their feature race when the
track officials were! As they hot lapped
a few, and lined up, Dwight Falcon
#F4 jumped the start and they hot lapped
a few, then Lipsey #85 hit the
wall on the green flag start. After
they towed Lipsey #85 off the track, they
were ready to start racing. Dwight
Falcon took the lead for the first lap,
then he went high in turn #4 letting Wade
Glass #82 inside to take the
lead, and he never looked back (if he had,
he would have noticed he was
1/2 track ahead of all the others!).
KI Davis #22 took second, with Falcon
still holding on the third, until Jody Miller
#5 spun in turn #1 causing
a caution. Upon the restart, Terry
Threeton #3T gets ahead of Falcon
for third, and so does Chris Wall #71 to
take fourth, leaving Falcon #F4
for fifth.
04/10/99
We had a full house, the spectator
parking was
full, and the pits were packed in like sardines.
Even had the late comers park in
the tech area! They had 121 cars sign
in at the pit gate, and 104 of them ran in
the feature races! Bryan Foy blew up
his spare motor in the hot laps, that put
him on the trailer, as well as Schonewitz
who loaded up early with mechanical
problems.
We started off with the Mini Stock
4 cylinder heat one with 2 bad starts,
causing them to start off the evening single
file. Scotty Covington #27 took
the lead as usual, with Richard Mathis #A1
second and #21 third. In the
second heat Wayne Wimberley #4 went flag
to flag for the win, with #28
second, and Crayton Dufrene #2EZ third.
The first Pure Stock heat had 2 bad
starts, with JD Kirby #K1 having
spinning problems. They finally got
started, and Jimmy Moody #38C hit K1
sending him to the infield and 38C to the
rear. Second place Benny Creel
#79 bumped the leader Billy Stewart #84 spinning
Stewart in turn #2, sending
Creel to the rear. Punkin Taylor #MT2
took the lead from Stewart on the
outside in turns #3 and #4, then Stewart
took the lead back from Taylor in
turn #2 and the back straightaway, and they
raced to the checkered flag.
The finish, Punkin Taylor first, Billy Stewart
second, with Gary Sharp #96
taking third. The second heat the leaders
were 3 wide all around the track for
the first lap and a half. Then Ray
Creel went high into the dirt on turn #2,
and they called caution on #07 Bryant Coyne
sending him to the rear. The
finish; #3TB David Creel first, #3H Kenneth
Hunt second, and 3T Mark
Woodall Third.
The UMP Modified first heat had 2 bad
starts as well, with Scott Holt
#26C taking the race flag to flag, with Gary
Revere #123 fighting with the
#8 for second. Revere finally got #8
on the white flag lap for second. The
second heat was uneventful until Dow Hillhouse
hit the wall sending him to
the pits. The finish; Eddie Kerry #63
first, Chris Burt #5 second, and Tim
Smith #02 for third.
Congratulations on the first Street
Stock heat, as they had no cautions!
#J36 took the early lead with Brian Crawford
#V4 second, Tony Grafia #20i
third, and David Scott #118 fourth fighting
hard for third. Finally at the end
of the race, Grafia goes high in turn #2
leaving room for Scott to get inside for
third. The finish; J36, Crawford second,
and Scott third. The second Street
Stock heat, started off with Angie West #5W
taking the early lead and holding
on to it until the white flag lap, when she
went high in turn #2 letting Gary
Seleno #100 and #614 both inside. Seleno
spins out, and Paul Lyons #44
sneaks in for the lead. The finish;
Lyons #44 first, #614 second, and West
#5W for third.
The 4 Cylinder Modified heat found
Steve Underwood #721 taking
the early lead, with Punkin Taylor #69 second,
and Jimmy Necaise #17,
for third. The first caution called
on Jimmy Hunt #4 went high in turn #2
putting him in the dirt, and the second caution
on 7X who spun out in turn #1
caused the leaders to get ansy. Necaise
tried to get around Taylor #69, and they
bumped as the white flag flew. Necaise
hit the dirt, and Taylor #69 spun into
#7 Jonathon Clayton sending them both to
the pits. The finish; Underwood,
Necaise, and Mike Taylor #15.
The first Super Pro Stock heat had
the field 2 wide, side by side, for the
first lap. Then #36 Henna spun in turn
#1 causing the first caution. Upon
the restart, Punkin Taylor #42 takes the
lead, with Melvin Barber #23 second
and Joy Shelton #12 for third. Patrick
Cotton #43 spun in turn #1 piling up
#36 Henna, and #14 with him. The finish;
Taylor first, Barber second, and
Shelton third. Congratulations to the
second heat, as they had no cautions!
Timmy Moody Mr. X, takes the lead, with Kevin
Kennedy #26K second, and
Bill Johnson #44 third. Moody goes
high in turn #2, and lets Kennedy inside
for the lead, then Kennedy goes high in turn
#2 and gives it right back to him.
The finish; Moody Mr. X, Johnson 44 second,
and Kennedy #26K third. After
the race, the first 2 leaders were disqualified,
as they never went to tech, giving
the win to Kennedy (with his new 6 cylinder
inline Ford engine).
The Late Model's first heat only had
one caution, when Campy Holley
#56 spun in turn #2. Ryan Plaisance
#125 took the win flag to flag, with Brian
Deroche #51 second, and Verlon Lee #1 for
third. Someone forgot to tell the
second Late Model field that it was a Heat
race, as they had several cautions, several
pile ups, and alot of great racing competition!
Upon the start of the race, the #10,
and Allen Obiol #4Q get hooked up in turns
#1 and #2 causing the first restart.
Then Obiol and Dwight Falcon F4 collide in
turn #2 causing the second restart.
This time single file, Allen Obiol #4Q takes
the lead, with #10 second, #F4 Falcon
third, and Simpson #284 fourth. It
sounds easy, but these 4 cars were battling
back and forth for position, sometimes 2
and 3 wide! #10 spins out, and piles
up Falcon F4 sending him to the pits.
Upon the restart, Obiol again has the lead
with Simpson #284 second, and Darrell Moser
#22 third. Simpson gets Obiol
on the inside coming out of turn #2 and beats
him down the back straightaway
on the white flag lap. Leaving the
finish; Simpson #284, Obiol #4Q, and #10.
In the Mini Stock Feature, Covington
#27 takes the win flag to flag, with
Richard Mathis #A1 second, and Wayne Wimberley
#4 third. As they
approach the white flag lap, the field is
4 wide coming out of turn #4 and down
the front straightaway. The #28 takes
third from Wimberley at the checkers.
The Pure Stock Feature was plagued
with many cautions. Punkin
Taylor #MT2 takes the early lead, with David
Creel #3TB second, and Gary
Sharp #96 fighting for third with Steven
King #76. MK81 Keith Rodriguez
flies off the back of turn #2 leaving #38C
Jimmy Moody in the dirt of turn #2.
JD Kirby K1, and Bryant Coyne #07 tangle
up in turn #4 for the second caution.
King #76 goes high in turn #2 letting Ray
Creel #3J inside for fourth. The
other cautions in the back of the field were
K1 JD Kirby, #38C Jimmy Moody,
#07 Bryant Coyne, #10 Snooky Hebert, and
#05. The finish; Punkin Taylor
#MT2 first, David Creel #3TB second, Gary
Sharp #96 third, and Ray Creel
#3J for fourth.
The UMP Modified feature was taken
away by Scott Holt #26C from
flag to flag. Gary Revere #123 second
all the way, and Chris Burt taking third
from Tim Smith #02.
The Street Stock Feature gave first
place to Roger Flynn #41 from flag
to flag. Randy Jamison #007 held second
until the white flag lap and a caution
sends him to the rear. #614 holds third,
while Crawford #V4, Jimmy Wood
#15, and Scott #118 are 3 wide for 2 laps
fighting for fourth. Crawford takes
fourth, with Scott fifth, until Scott finally
takes fourth back from Crawford down
the back straightaway. Gary Fergason
#00 goes off the back of turn #2, causing
a caution. On the restart Crawford
#V4 hits Scott #118, bumping him back in
the field. Leaving the finish; Flynn
#41 first, #614 second, and Crawford #V4
for third.
The 4 Cylinder Modified Feature started
with Clayton #7 pole, and
Necaise #17 outside pole. After 2 restarts,
the race began with Clayton #7
taking the lead, with Necaise second until
turn #2. Necaise went high in turn
#2 leaving room for Punkin Taylor #69 and
Steve Underwood #721 to get
inside. Necaise regained third from
Underwood down the front straightaway
with 2 laps to go. Leaving the finish;
Clayton #7 first, Taylor #69 second,
Necaise #17 third, and Underwood #721 for
fourth.
The Super Pro Feature started with
the entire field 2 and 3 wide for the
first 2 laps! As they sort it all out,
Chris Matise #71 takes the lead, with Jay Ladner
#4 second, Bobby Helmer #41 third, #7L Collins
fourth, Gary Gaines #8 fifth,
#12 Joy Shelton sixth, and Patrick Cotton
#43 for seventh. But that was just
the beginning! Matise goes high in
turn #2 and #14Y (WAS a brand new car)
hit him and they both retired to the pits.
Jason Payler #48 pushed Cotton #43
sideways and piled up #121 Dwayne Balfantz,
#44 Bill Johnson, #45 Robert
Whittingham, as the #27 came around turn
#4 and hit all of them! After they
sorted out that mess, Jay Ladner #4 gets
the lead, with Helmer second, Collins
third, Shelton fourth, and Cotton fifth.
On the White Flag Lap, Helmer takes the
lead from Ladner on the back straightaway,
as Ladner then spins into Collins
taking them both out. The finish; Helmer
#41 the winner, Joy Shelton #12
for second, and #48 Jason Paylor for third.
The Late Model Feature found Casnove
#124 taking the win from
flag to flag, with Ryan Plaisance #125, Simpson
#284, and Threeton #3T
3 wide fighting for second. Threeton
#3T takes second, with #27 third,
and Ryan Plaisance #125 for fourth.
Plaisance and #27 fight back and forth
for third place. The leaders lapped
so many of the rest of the field, it was hard
to tell who was on what lap! The finish;
Casnove #124 first, Threeton #3T
second, with #27 third, Plaisance #125 fourth,
Falcon F4 fifth, and Wall #71
sixth.
The Demolition Derby was a dust bowl.
After all the dust settled, G7
Greg Smith won first, D55 Donnie Stewart
second, and Jason Novell third.
04/03/99
Mother Nature smiled on us Saturday
night, as
we started the hot laps with a very large
black cloud over us. However, by the
start of the heat races, it had passed allowing
us to continue our program! Again,
I would like to remind all of you to remember
Alan Nevellin in your prayers. The
driver of the 00 Late Model had his car fall
on him, and he was hurt badly. Also,
Pure Stock cars have one more week to get
in tune with the rule book. No quick
steering boxes, must have bumpers, and a
GM car must have a GM rear end.
WTIX 690 AM is hosting a "Track Talk", a
talk show focusing on Stock Car
racing, on Saturday mornings from 10:00am
until noon. They will also be
announcing our local racing results from
the prior week! Tune in and talk racing!
Another reminder, all the local race results
from all the area tracks are posted on
www.speed-demons.com web site. Car
count for this week (hot laps) was 86!
The evening started off with the Mini
Stock's first heat race, with 36
taking the lead, #6 (Willie McVey) second,
and A1 for third. The second heat
found the #27 (Scotty Covington) again way
out front. #43 had second until
he spun in turn 4 landing in the infield
sending him to the rear. This left the final
#27 Covington the winner, #4 second, and
41 third.
The Pure Stock's first heat was a rematch
from last week, with MT2
(Jeff Taylor) and 3TBlue on pole. 3TBlue
lagged behind on the first start. The
second restart gave MT2 an early lead, but
3TB caught him coming out of turn
#2 heading down the back straighaway.
Leaving the finish 3TB, MT2 (Taylor),
and 79 respectively. In the second
heat, the 3J (Creel) came from dead last all
around the field like they were standing
still. K1 lead the race until 3J caught him
to take the lead. K1 finished second,
and #3 third.
The UMP class finally showed up, and
put on a good show. In the first
heat 6X took an early lead with #25 second
and #123 third. The #25 challenged
the 6X in turn #4 and took the lead from
him on the front straightaway, sending
the 6X to third. 63 landed in the infield,
and 7X hit the wall hard. The finish,
#25, #123, and 6X. The second heat
gave the 86 an early lead, with 02 second,
and #5 third. #86 went high in turn
#2 giving the 02 and #5 room to get
underneath him on the inside. #86 again
went high in turn #2, giving up his
third place spot, landed in the dirt of turn
#2 and stalled sending him to the rear.
#5 takes the lead from 02 down the back straightaway
on a wheel hop. #02
takes the lead back from #5 in turn #3, but
couldn't hang on to it, as he spun
around backwards in turn #4. #5 had
to leave for a flat tire, and #02 was sent
to the rear. This gave the lead to
the #7, until he went high in turn #2 leaving
02 back into the lead on the inside.
The finish, #02, #18, and #7.
Angie West (5W) takes the early lead
in the first Street Stock heat, and stays
there forever! Leaving Davidson #007
second, Mistasha #20f third, and Fraisse
Labarre #77 fourth. Labarre takes third
from Mistasha on the back straightaway.
Paul Lyons #44 tries many times to take fourth
from 20f in turn #4, and finally
gets there before the end of the race!
The finish, West 5W, Davidson #007,
Labarre #77, Lyons #44, and #34 Noah Daspit
in the rear. The second heat
race had a hard time getting sorted out,
as they were still 2 by 2 for the first
2 laps, until they reached the back straightaway
again. Tony Grafia #20i starts
the lead off, with Donnie Stewart #D55 second,
and #36 third. Stewart D55,
takes the lead from Grafia #20i on the back
straightaway, and #36 takes second
from Grafia #20i in turn #2. Stewart
D55 goes high and #36 slips inside to
take the lead. The remainder of the
field goes 3 wide through turns #3 and #4
twice in a row fighting for third!
It was a race to the flagman for the finish, and
I don't know who scored there first.
The 4 Cylinder Modified heat, had 00
(Mike Bethe) on the pole, and as
a new driver, he lagged behind on the start,
and then requested the rear. #7
Clayton took the early lead, with #789 Herb
Champagne second, and #69
Punkin Taylor third. Taylor passed
789 on the back straightaway to take
second. The hood flew up on #7X sending
him to the pits, and #721 broke
a ball joint and hit the dirt in turn #2
also sending him to the pits. Leaving
the finish #7 Clayton, #69 Taylor, #789 Champagne.
The Super Pro Stock's first heat found
#43 Patrick Cotton taking the
early lead, with #23 Melvin Barber second,
and #12 Joy Shelton third. M5
Mark Dilllard slides on the inside of #41Yellow
Moran for fourth. #12
Shelton catches Barber #23 in turns 3 &
4 to take second, leaving Barber for
third. The second heat #26K Kevin Kennedy
taking the lead, with #4G
Walter Gibbs second. Three cars go
3 wide in turns 3 & 4 fighting for third,
#1 Honeycutt, #11 Lavignette, and #121 Dwayne.
Kennedy #26K goes high
in turn #2 giving #4G Walter Gibbs the lead,
and #11 Lavignette and #121
Dwayne, tangle up in turns #1 and #2, giving
third to #1 Honeycutt. Kennedy
again goes high in turn #2 giving second
to #1 Honeycutt. #4G and #1
Honeycutt race to the flagman for the checkers.
Again, I don't know who got
there first.
The Late Model heat started with turns
1 & 2 three cars wide. #51
Deroche takes the lead, with F4 Falcon second,
and 3T Threeton third. Falcon
takes the lead from Deroche in turn #2.
Deroche tried to go inside F4 in turn
#4, but couldn't hold on to it, and spun
piling up the rest of the field with him.
#3T Threeton had to go to the pits.
On the restart the line up was Falcon, #71
Chris Wall, and #284 Simpson. Wall
#71, spun in turn #1 giving Simpson
second, and #10 third. Deroche #51
goes inside #10 in turn #4, and Simpson
#284 gets inside Falcon F4 in turn #2.
Wall #71 gets Deroche in turn #4, and
Falcon F4 gets Simpson #284 in turns 1 &
2 to regain the lead. It was a fight
to the finish with all of them going back
and forth! The finish left Falcon F4
first, Simpson #284 second, and Wall #71
third. Alot of action for a Late Model
heat race!
The Mini Feature was very uneventful,
with Covington #27 taking the
lead as usually, with A1 second, and #4 third
throughout the race.
The Pure Stock Feature had #3J Creel,
and #3TBlue on the poles as
usual. And these 2 boys stayed there
all day, with MT2 Jeff Taylor third.
The UMP Feature had #123 Jimmy Casnove
first, #6X second and
#5 Burt for third.
The Street Stock Feature gave us some
more excitement! #44 Lyons
takes the early lead, with #41 Flynn second,
and #34 Noah Daspit third. V4
Crawford, and #84 Pretlove fight back and
forth for fourth until #84 left for
the pits, leaving #40 Flynn to fight back
and forth for the fourth position. 5W
Angie West comes from the rear to fifth,
then fourth! With #44 out to the pits,
the line up is #41 Flynn, #34 Daspit, #40
Flynn, and West #5W. On the
white flag lap, #40 Flynn tries to take second
from #34 Daspit, and spun out in
turn #2 wiping out #34 and #5W, #40 was giving
the caution on the score-
board, leaving #34 Daspit second, and #5W
third for the finish.
The 4 Cylinder Modified Feature found
#69 Punkin Taylor with the
early lead, and stayed there all day!
#7 Clayton second, and #15 third.
The Super Pro Stock Feature finds #41
Helmer taking the early lead, with
#71 Matty for second, and a fight for third.
#7 Brian Foy comes from the rear
and takes M5 Dillard on the front straightaway
for fifth. #12 Shelton takes
#121 Dwayne in turn #4 for third. #7
Foy takes #121 Dwayne in turn #1
for fourth. #7 Foy takes third from
#12 Shelton in turn #3, for one lap, then
#12 Shelton takes it back in turn #4.
The caution restart line up was #41
Helmer, #71 Matty, #12 Shelton, #7 Foy, #121
Dwayne. Foy #7 goes high
in turn #2 giving up his fourth place position
to #121 Dwayne on the inside.
Foy #7 goes high again in turn #2 and lets
in a field of M5 Dillard, 4G Gibbs,
and #43 Cotton inside. Leaving the
finish #41 Helmer, #71 Matty, #12
Shelton, #121 Dwayne, and #M5 Dillard.
The Late Model Feature had Jody Miller
#5 starting pole, and #71 Chris
Wall outside pole. #71 Chris Wall went
high in turn #2 then spun right into the
path of the field, then, went off the back
side of the track in turn #3, the dog leg.
At this point, we still do not have a lap
down. After two cautions, we restart single
file, with Miller #5 in the lead, Falcon
F4, second, and Deroche #51 third.
Falcon takes the lead from Miller in turn
#4. Simpson #284 tries many times to
get third from #51, and finally gets him
as Deroche goes high in turn #2. Miller
goes high in turn #2, hits the birm, but
retains his second position. Deroche #51
tries to get Miller #5 many times, and finally
spins out in turn #4 trying to get
him, sending Deroche to the rear. Leaving
the finish Falcon F4, Miller #5, and
Simpson #284 third.

RESTART, RESTART, RESTART!
It was a veryyyyy colddddd spring evening
in
Hickory Louisiana Saturday night, but that
didn't slow down the drivers with
race fever, as our first week of racing had
rained out! While some were loaded up
on their trailers disqualified, 83 cars hot
lapped that passed tech. Some that hot
lapped, never made it any further.
Mark Dillard (M5) threw a rod out of the oil pan
timing in. And Joey Wheat's (21) rocker
kept falling off so he could never time in.
Kenny Allison's (10) kept popping real bad,
so he had trouble timing in as well.
The (190) painted like the NASCAR Dupont
Colors, also blew up and caught on
fire, and didn't time in as well. Lavignette
#11 lost his wheel and axle, and started
smoking up a storm. The wrecker
had problems getting to the track, as it was broke
down, and caused us a big delay in starting.
I will also add that FINALLY, if you
did not pack the track, you started last!
It appears that they are really giving great
effort in enforcing the rules this year!
Good Luck! Let's just hope they continue
that effort all year! Keep it up!
Some of the names, and time-ins are blank, as the PA
system kept going in and out, even the others
that I talked to missed the same ones I
did, hopefully it will be fixed this week,
as I mentioned it to the tower. By the way,
the tower is not giving out any times or
results to anyone, I already asked, that is
why this story is written the way it is,
I used my own notes, as viewed from the pit
stands. If I made any mistakes, I apologize,
and please send me an email so I can
update my records, Thanks!
Super Pro Stock had a hard time getting
the first heat race of the night
started, as Mr. X (Timmy Boutte), spun in
turns 3 & 4 that piled up:
Mr. X, 4G (Walter Gibbs) and Yellow X (Brian
?). Brian Foy (7) landed in the
infield to miss all of them. The 2nd restart
found 43 (Patrick Cotton) pushed
into the infield with a pile up in turns
1 & 2. They finally got underway, and
Patrick Cotton (43) landed in the infield
again on lap 3, and he and Jay Ladner
(4) both left the track. 71 car left the
next lap, leaving the finish: Brian Foy (7),
Walter Gibbs (4G), Mr. X (Timmy Boutte),
and the Yellow X respectively.
The 2nd heat of the Super Pro Stock
had its own share of problems, with
121 (Dwayne ?), 62 (James King), and 51 piling
up causing the 1st restart, leaving
the 62 car in the infield, and 121 car ok,
while they push started the 51 to restart
again. Lap 2 , the 23 (Melvin Barber Sr.)
had the lead and went high in turn 2
pushing him back to 4th, leaving room for
the 41 to get underneath to take the
lead forever. The 12 car started 4th
moved up to 3rd in lap 3, and took second
from Bill Johnson (44) on the outside in
the dog leg The 41 car had the lead
by 1/2 track, when the caution flag flew
due to 23 in the infield on the dog leg.
With 2 laps to go, the 51 got around the
62 in the dog leg, and the very next
lap the 51 got around the 121 car in the
dog leg to take 4th and keep it.
Bill Johnson (44) started 3rd and finished
3rd! The final being 41, 12, 44, 51,
121, 62, and 23 respectively.
The Late Model heat found Vernon Lee
(#1 Big Dog) in the infield
backwards on the front straightaway, causing
a restart. Lap one went smoothly
with Vernon Lee (#1) in first, Wade Glass
(82) second, F4 third, and Jody
Miller (5) forth. That didn't last
long, lap 2 the caution flag fell as 00 spun in
turns 1 & 2, lap 3 Miller (5) tried to
go sideways down the front straight which
moved him from 4th to 5th as Wayne Martin
(B7) took 4th, and the 9 car left the
track. Glass (82) took the lead from
Vernon (1) lap 4. All was quiet until lap 7,
where Wayne Martin took 3rd from F4, and
stayed. Leaving the final for the heat:
82, 1, B7, F4, 5, 71 and 00 respectively.
At this point we had a time out to
water the track as it was so dry and dusty
you could no longer see the cars on the track!
Very much different than last year
where the track was sticky all night!
Next heat brought on the 4 Cylinder
Modifieds heat which was caution free!
Much different from the others! Bennie
Raynor (1) took the lead with 721 (Steve
Underwood) 2nd and Punkin Taylor (69) third.
Stayed the same until lap 4 where
721 took the lead from 1 in turns 3 &
4. 95 dropped out, and Jimmy Necaise (17)
dropped out the next lap. Leaving the
final: 721, 1, 69, and 7 (Clayton). Goes to
show ya, they get all the bugs out of the
car and I can't drive it!
The first Street Stock heat restarted
right off the bat with a "no green flag"
start. After the restart, found lap
one with Angie West 5W in the lead with Joey
Dillard (C7) 2nd, and Fraisse Labarre (77)
3rd. Lap 2 Dillard (C7, new driver),
pulled a 360 spin in turn 2, which sent him
to the back for the restart, moving
77 to 2nd and V4 to 3rd. Labarre took
the lead in turn 2, and kept it forever.
Lap 5 77 had the lead by 1/2 track, when
14M Danny Martin spun in turns 1 & 2
sending him to the rear, and 20F left the
track. 007 tried to overcome the 3rd
place postion, and landed in the infield
in turns 1 & 2, sending him to the
rear as well. This left the finish
77, 5W, V4, 40, 41, 007, C7, and 14M.
The second heat of Street Stock started
the same as the first, with a false
start (no green), and a restart. Donnie
Stewart (D55) jumped out in front for the
lead, leaving 118 David Scott for second,
and 26 for 3rd. Lap 3 found 20i spun
in turns 1 & 2, sending him to the back,
and 26 fell to 6th place, leaving 44 third,
73 fourth, and 34 (Noah Daspit) fifth, and
84 (Billy Pretlove) tagging the rear. The
very next lap, 73 car left the field, and
the 26 came from the rear to 4th place. As
they entered the completion of lap 5 the
leading cars were 3 wide in turn 4! Stewart
found the dirt pile in turn 2, giving 118
the lead, and sending D55 to the rear. 73
came back in on that caution, and the restart
line up was 118 (David Scott), 44, 34
(Noah Daspit), 84 (Billy Pretlove), 20i,
D55 and 73. The remainder of the race
was the same, and that is also your final
line up.
Unfortunately, there were only 3 UMP
cars to show up (they look like an
IMCA). Scott Holt (26C) took the lead
early, and gained an 1/2 track lead on
the others. The #1 (Fletcher) car was
smoking real bad, but remained second,
leaving the 18 car in the rear.
The first Pure Stock heaat started
smoothly with 96 taking the lead, with 3T
(Threeton), second, and 07 third until lap
2, when 79 took third, leaving 07 fourth.
On the following lap MT2 (Jeff Taylor) overtook
07 for 4th, and 3T yellow moved
to 5th. Lap five had a caution, where
#10 spun in turn #2, lap six #79 spun in
the dog leg throwing another caution sending
them to the rear. #10 got 07 in turn
#1, for the final being: 96, 3T (Threeton),
79, MT2 (Jeff Taylor), 3T yellow, 10,
07, and 100 (who requested the rear).
The 2nd Pure Stock heat found the 3
last place cars three wide in the front
straightaway right from the start (#K1, 3H
(Hunt), and 84! #7 jumped in the
lead with 3J (Creel) second, and 38C third,
until the second lap 38C landed in the
dirt in turn #2. The very next lap
38C landed in the infield on the straightaway,
13 lost his left rear tire and axle, and
had to be hauled off in the wrecker, oil all
over the track, the track personnel lighted
it to burn it off, giving us our own
Pure Stock Bon Fire! The restart line
up was: 7, 3J (Creel), 38C, 3, 84, 3H (Hunt),
and K1 remaining. Again 38C landed
in the infield in turns 3 & 4, which black
flagged him, and he exited the track.
The race continued until 2 laps left, and 3H,
and K1 spun in turns 1 & 2, which threw
out cars 84, and K1. Leaving the final
for the race: 7, 3J, 3, and 3H respectively.
The 4 Banger Mini Stock heat 1 was
just as hard to start with 01 and 33
spinning out in turn #2, throwing them out
of the race, and causing a restart.
But it wasn't for long, as the 2EZ (Dufrene),
lost a wheel and #6 hit it causing
both of them to be eliminated from the race.
The only 2 left to race were the 41,
and the A1. 41 hit the wall, leaving
A1 (Richard Mathis) the consolation prize!
The second Mini Stock heat also had
its problems starting as well, as the
#5 spun out in turn 1 right off the bat.
Scott Covington (27), took the lead early
on, with Herb Champagne (789) following.
#27 held the lead throughout the
race and had 1/2 track on #789, who had 1/2
track on the rest of the field. #43
fell out as well as #5 leaving the finish:
27 (Covington), 789 (Champagne), #4,
and #A2.
The feature races were very intense,
and not as eventfull as far as accidents,
and cautions. Which was very exciting
to all of us! The first feature of the evening
were the Mini Stock. A1 (Richard Mathis)
pole, and 789 (Herb Champagne)
outside pole, to start. A1 jumped the
start, causing a restart. 789 jumped in for
the lead, with A1 second, and Willie McVay
(#6) third on the restart. Second lap
the 33 car landed in the infield sending
him to the rear, and the 43 car left the track.
Lap 3 the 65 car took 4th from the #4 car
on the back straightaway, and the 33 car
left the track. The rest is history,
as the line up stayed the same throughout the
remainder of the race, leaving the finish:
#789 (Herb Champagne), #A1 (Richard
Mathis), #6 (Willie McVay), 65, 4, A2 respectively.
The Pure Stock feature was plagued
with debris on the track which caused
them 3 cautions. #96 car jumped in
the lead from the start, with 3T (Threeton)
close behind, #7 taking 3rd and 3J (Creel)
in fourth. K1 spun in turns 1 & 2,
38C left the track, and 3T got a flat on
lap 5. K1 spun again on the front straight
away on lap 6. MT2 (Jeff Taylor) started
6th and made his way to 4th, when he
and 3J (Creel) tied up on the front straightaway
in lap 7, causing 3J to spin in
turn 1, and sending MT2 to the rear giving
3T yellow 4th. The 3T yellow and
the 84 went back and forth between 4th and
5th for the next 3 laps, when 3H
(Hunt) ran into 3T yellow causing caution
on the 3H, and the 3T (Threeton)
re-entered the race in the rear. MT2
again came back to 5th from the back , then
took 3rd from 84. The white flag lap
#7 hit the wall, letting the #3 get in front
of him for the final to be: #96, 3J (Creel),
MT2 (Jeff Taylor), 84, 3T (Threeton),
7, 3, 07, 100, and 3H.
The UMP feature was a repeat of the
heat race, with Scott Holt (26C)
taking the lead, with #1 second and 18 tagging
the rear. #1 spun in turns 1 & 2
starting a fire, but then push started to
continue the race! The finish 26C Scott
Holt, #1 Fletcher, and #18 pulling the rear.
The Street Stock feature started off
caution free with Ronnie Flynn (40)
taking the lead, with Noah Daspit (34) close
behind in second, Roger Flynn (41)
in third, and 44 fourth. The 3rd lap
44 took 3rd from the 41, and on the very
next lap took 2nd from Noah (34). All
was quiet until the 5th lap when the
two front runners (40 Flynn and 44) were
racing to the flagpole on the front
straightaway, and lapping the 20F car when
the three of them collided, sending
the 44 car to the pits, caution on the 20F.
The restart line up had Ronnie Flynn
(40) in the lead, with Noah Daspit (3) second,
41 (Roger Flynn) third, and Fraisse
Labarre (77) fourth. After two more
laps in, the entire middle of the field crashed
in turns 1 & 2, including 007, 73, 84
(Billy Pretlove), and 118 (David Scott)
all piled up, sending the 73 car to the pits.
The front runners remained the same
throughout the race, with the excitement
in the middle of the field, with the 007
and 118 battling back and forth for 5th and
6th, and the 84 and V4 battling back
and forth for 7th and 8th positions.
4 laps to go , the C7 (Joey Dillard) spun in
turns 1 & 2 causing the yellow flag to
fly, which brought the 73, and 44 cars back
into the race. They get one lap in,
and the middle of the field, 007, 118 and 84
tangle up on the front straightaway for the
next caution. The very next lap, the
44, 14, and C7 tangle up in turns 1 &
2, causing the 44 and 14 to leave the race.
Then, once again the 118, and 007 tie up
leaving 007 in the infield, sending him
to the rear, and the 77 leaves the track.
The final layout was: 40 (Ronnie Flynn),
34 (Noah Daspit), 41 (Roger Flynn), 118 (David
Scott), V4, 84 (Billy Pretlove),
55, 73, C7 (Joey Dillard), and the 20F.
The 4 Cylinder Modified feature was
uneventful, with the exception, that
Bennie Raynor's #1 car had carburetor problems
that would cut out on him
several times during the race, causing many
near misses from the other drivers!
Jimmy Necaise (17) requested the rear as
he lost 2nd gear in his transmission and
had to run 3rd gear. The 7 car (Clayton)
started pole, and the 69 (Punkin Taylor)
outside pole. The 7 car took the lead
from the start and maintained it throughout
the race. 721 (Steve Underwood) tried
all he could to get around the 2nd place
Punkin Taylor (69), but never could find
a hole. The finish: #7, #69, #721, #17,
and #1 who had to leave the track for a black
flag, as his carburetor kept cutting
in and out on him throughout the race.
The Super Pro Stock class again had
its problems getting started for their
feature. #4 (Jay Ladner) jumped the
start the first time. The second restart, the
front runners piled up in turns 1 & 2
#41, #4G (Walter Gibbs), #12 (Rodney
Bruce), and #7 (Brian Foy) who broke his
coil over and mount, and had to leave
the track. They again restarted, and
Jay Ladner (4) lead the pack with 41 second,
12 third, and 71 fourth. The 44 (Bill
Johnson) and Mr. X (Timmy Boutte), kept
trading back and forth at the end of the
pack. Four laps into the feature, the 71
car fell back to 5th as 4G (Walter Gibbs)
claimed fourth. The next lap, the 121
car spun out in turns 1 & 2 causing another
restart, and the 71 left the track.
Rodney Bruce (12) and Walter Gibbs (4G) battled
back and forth for 3rd ,
throughout the remainder of the race.
On the white flag lap, Jay Ladner (4)
got a flat tire coming out of turn 2 and
down the back straight deminishing his
chances for another 1st place win.
The final: 41, 12 (Rodney Bruce), 4G (Walter
Gibbs), 51, 23 (Melvin Barber), Mr. X (Timmy
Boutte), and 44 (Bill Johnson).
The Late Model feature was very exciting
as the top 5 cars battled it out!
Vernon Lee (#1) started out in the lead,
but got a flat tire and spun out in the dog
leg, sending him to the pits. Wade
Glass (82) took the lead, with Jody Miller (5)
close behind, and F4 right behind, and B7
(Wayne Martin) in 4th. Jody Miller,
F4, and B7 battled back and forth for their
positions the entire race, until F4 and
B7 tied up, sending B7 to the pits half way
through the race. On that caution
Vernon Lee (#1) re-joined the group at the
tail end. This left the leader 82 (Glass)
with F4 second, and Jody Miller (5) third.
F4 caught up with the 82 and they
raced to the checkers at the end of the race,
I'm sorry I did not see who actually
passed the flagman first for the win, as
I was in the pit area.
Although it was very freezing cold,
and most of the spectators left, they
missed and exciting Demolition Derby!
#212 sponsored by Gary's Towing was
the first one knocked out of the derby, with
#3 right behind him. The 7 car
took a heck of a licking, but kept on ticking
for the win. 15 car took second, and
G7 third.
032799
Again it was a very cold windy evening
in
Hickory Louisiana. That did not stop
the racers or fans! The track is beautiful,
and the drivers love it, and the fans love
the 3 and 4 wide races! Great job done
by Mr. Ivy again! 71 cars I counted
in hot laps, and 6 more came in late, giving
my count 77. We wish for all of you
to add Alan Nevellin to your prayers, as his
race car fell on him and he is in critical
condition, as of Saturday night. We had a
guest with us, Robert White and his 27 4
cylinder Modified car joined us from
Georgia!
We started out with the Mini Stock
heat1 which again had Scotty Covington
#27 in the lead by 1/2 track. #4 took
#36 for 2nd as the first caution flew for the
#5 car spun in turn #2. Heat 2, the
A1 car took the lead early and stayed there, as
the 2EZ tried to catch him but could not.
The Pure stock heat1 had the #79 car
jump the start, as the 3TBlue hit the
38C wheel hopped, sent 38C into the dirt
in #2, and the 100 car hit 38C again!
The restart was a good start with the 3J
(Bennie Creel) taking the early lead with
3TBlue close behind, and 79 starting 3rd.
The #79 took turn #4 wide allowing
#96 to slide past him underneath. Again
the next lap the #79 car again hung high
in turn #4 to allow the K1 to pass underneath!
Heat 2 finds (Jeff Taylor) MT2,
taking an early lead with 7B, and 84 right
behind, with the 3TYellow and 07
battling for 4th. The 7B tried to get
MT2, but couldn't catch him! #10 passed
07 on the white flag lap!
Again the UMP cars had a only 2 cars
show up this week, and #63 lead
the whole heat by 1/2 track over the #18,
no contest.
The Street Stock Heat1 had the 20i
(Tony Graffia) lagging behind on the
start, causing a restart, and then left the
field due to mechanical problems. The V4
(Brian Crawford) took the lead from the outside,
with #73 (Bob Boyd) second,
and D55 (Donnie Stewart) 3rd. 00 (Gary
Paris) takes 3rd from D55 Stewart on
the back straightaway. 41 (Roger Flynn)
takes the 3rd place position from D55
and 00 on the back straightaway!
00 hits the dirt on turn #2 and almost goes
over the edge, causing the 1st caution of
this race. Then the 41 (Roger Flynn)
takes 2nd from the 73 Boyd on the white flag
lap, then takes the lead from V4
Crawford in turn #4 in a race to the checkers!
Street Stock heat2 20f (Richard Mistasha)
jumped the start, while the 60
lagged behind, causing 2 restarts.
Upon the final restart the entire field remained
side by side for one complete lap! Then the
20F jumped out front at the flagman
with 44 (Paul Lyons) close behind for second,
and 60 for 3rd. The pile up of 44,
60 , and C7 in turns 1 & 2 started our
first caution. #60 goes wide in turn #2
giving up 3rd for the 118 (David Scott).
20f (Richard Mistasha) after leading the
entire race, goes wide in turn #2 and lands
in the infield! #60 goes high in
turn #2 and leaves C7 into the inside for
second.
The 4 Cylinder Modified heat started
out with #10 Kenny Allison in the
lead, with Bennie Raynor #1 close in second
and Punkin Taylor #69 third, very
tight! The first lap found #10 and
#1 side by side through turns #3 & #4
and #69 & #17 (Jimmy Necaise) side by
side down the back straightaway! At the
flag they sorted out as #10, #1, #69 then
#17 very tight together. Our guest
Robert White in the #27 car hit the dirt
in turn #2, and caused our first and only
caution. Bennie Raynor went high in
turn #2 giving #17 on the inside 2nd place.
As 10 & 17 run side by side through turns
3 and 4, 10 goes high and puts 17
in the lead. 721 comes from behind
and takes third from #69 in turn #4. With
Jimmy Necaise (17) in a comfortable lead,
the others still go 4 wide through turn
#2 all of them battling for 2nd place!
On the white flag lap, #1 and #10 side by
side again in turn #4, #10 goes high throwing
him in the dirt, and letting everyone
else go by, leaving the finish: 17 Necaise,
1 Raynor, 721 Underwood, 69 Taylor.
Super Pro Stock heat 1 started with
Brian Foy #7 taking the early lead by
1/4 track! The first caution caused
by the 62 (James King) spun 180 degrees tying
up with Mr. X (Timmy Boutte) in turn #4.
The 41 Bobby Helmer tried to catch
Foy, but never could. The second heat
found the 71, and 23 (Melvin Barber)
trading 1st and 2nd back and forth, and the
back of the pack 4 wide all fighting
for 3rd. After Patrick Cotton's (43)
spin out, in turn #2, he comes from behind
on the inside to steal second from Barber,
leaving the 71 car alone in front by 1/4
track. 71 and 43 1/2 track in front
of the rest of the pack!
The Late Model heat started off with
a spin early, the 51, and 3T (Terry
Threeton) in turn #2 entering the track!
F4 (Dwight Falcon) jumps the start,
causing a restart. Falcon takes the
early lead with 1 (Vernon Lee) 2nd, 71 (Chris
Wall) 3rd, 3T Threeton 3rd, 9 (Dwayne Degruy),
and 51 in the rear. Degruy takes
3T on the back straight, and Wall loses it
in #4 and Degruy sneaks right inside.
Our feature races start with the Mini
Stock class and again 27 Covington
takes the lead as usual, and A1 close behind.
Our 2 cautions found the #5 in the
infield, and finally towed off with a flat
tire. 2EZ and #4 battle for 3rd. The final
27, A1, 4, 2EZ, 01, 36, and 41.
The Pure Stock Feature had more excitement
than anyone deem necessary.
3T jumps the start causing the first restart.
38C and M1 tangle up in turns 1 & 2
for the second restart. 3J (Bennie
Creel) takes the early lead while the 3TBlue,
MT2 (Jeff Taylor), 7, and 84 four wide fighting
for second. The 7 got second
from MT2 on the back straightaway, and the
very next lap, MT2 goes high in
turn #2 and falls to 5th. Our first
caution was due to the 96 wheel falling off
in turns 1 & 2. M1 rejoins the
troops, and then ties up with 38C, and 07 in turn
#2 to be towed back off the track again.
MT2 bypasses the 3TBlue in the back
straightaway, and side by side with the #7
car starting into turn #3, when the
3TBlue car dove across the infield birm to
smash into the both of them. The
3TBlue bounces off both of them, loses a
tire, hits the wall on the front straight-
away, gets black flagged for rough driving,
then gets out of his car on the track
to start a fight! Even had to have
deputies escort him in the pit area! Way too
much aggression for a measly $100.00!!
Rule #5 "No fighting will be tolerated".
Rule #9 "Anyone not conducting themselves
in a safe and respectful manner will
be asked to leave. If they don't they
will be removed by the authorities." Rule
#14 "No driver will leave their car during
a race while on the track except in an
extreme case of safety". So on, So
on, So on. Remember guys, like the drunk
driving commercial "You are entering 3250
pounds of iron that's loaded". These
cars can seriously hurt and/or kill someone,
let's keep our heads, and stay safe!
It's not life or death, It's only a race!
After all the excitement calmed down,
we finally started the Street Stock
feature, with D55 Donnie Stewart losing his
wheel entering the track! Roger
Flynn (41) takes the early lead, with Billy
Pretlove (84) , and Paul Lyons (44)
right behind. 20i spins out in turn
#2, then there is a pile up in the very next
lap at turn #2 including 44 Lyons, C7 (Billy
Stewart), and 73 (Bob Boyd),
Lyons goes off the track, and caution called
on Boyd. The finish: Flynn, Pretlove,
Stewart, and V4 (Brian Crawford).
The 4 Cylinder Modified feature lost
#10 Kenny Allison, but gained 00
(Mike Bethe), a late arrival. Jimmy
Necaise #17 takes the early lead with Steve
Underwood #721 2nd, Clayton #7 3rd, Taylor
#69 4th, Raynor #1 5th,
White #27 6th, and 00 going to the grocery
(first time driver). Both the 27 and
the 00 were lapped by the veterans, and in
turn #2, Clayton tagged the 27 car
in lapping him, and the 69 ended up in the
infield nose first to avoid them.
Raynor went high in turn #4 and stalled allowing
Taylor to get under him, and
Raynor left the track with mechanical problems.
Leaving the finish: Necaise,
Underwood, Taylor, Raynor, White, Bethe,
Clayton (disqualified for being
underweight).
The Pro Stock feature started off very
smoothly, with Patrick Cotton (43)
taking the early lead, with Bobby Helmer
(41) second. Brian Foy (7) took 3rd
from Timmy Boutte (Mr. X), then Lavignette
(11) took 4th from Boutte. The
front runners lapped so many of the back
field, it was hard for all of us to keep
track of who's on first? Boutte, 71,
and Helmer tango in turns 1 & 2, then
again on the back straightaway on the white
flag lap. The finish: Cotton, Helmer,
and Foy.
The Late Model feature started with
a smash up at the flagman on the start.
F4 and 3T smashed, collapsing the passenger
side of F4, and the front end of 3T.
3T Left the track, 51 left with a flat tire.
On the restart #9 Degruy jumped the
start, and 51 and 3T (Threeton) come back
in. Vernon Lee takes the lead, and
71 (Chris Wall) hits the wall. F4,
Falcon took first from Lee in turn #2, and
Lee tried to take it back in turn #3, they
tied up, leaving Falcon in the infield.
F4 again takes the lead, with Degruy second,
and Wall third. Wall and Degruy
battle back and forth for second, but Degruy
has no room, and spins in turn #2
on the white flag lap, leaving the finish:
Falcon, Wall, Threeton, 51, and Degruy.
As freezing cold as it was, the ladies
still ran their Powder Puff race to
finish off the evening, I'm sorry I don't
have any of their names. The 3J took
an early lead, with B1 second and V4 3rd.
K1 gets around 79 for 4th.
